The last time my son was on campus he was unable to receive phone calls or text on his T-Mobile G1. Was it just a fluke or is there no reception there. If not, which carrier has the best reception? Any 3G data available on cell phones?

There is a small dead zone by Admin, and maybe another by GRC. About three steps worth. Worst was at Cerro, sometimes you had to hang by a window… that was with ATT

I forgot to mention this, the 3g network isn’t set up in SLO so the phone switches back to the EDGE network. there might have been a rare mix-up or something.

I have t-mobile and when i toured the campus I got 5 bars in some places but in others less. I dont think i had signal inside the buildings but outside it was decent.

thanks everyone. Maybe it is because he has a T-Mobile G1 that runs on the 3G network and he has to manually set it to run on edge only. The voice goes over 3G normally.

So which is the best service on campus and SLO if he decides to bail. Does any carrier have 3G service? Is there campus wi-fi that cell phones can jump on?

Wireless access is available at the library and inside the UU. Some dorms have wireless placecd at specialized areas; for example you can access the internet from outside the swimming pool at poly canyon.

In the dorms you will have to connect from a cord. Students are not supposed to have their own routers, and the internet system is set up to prevent us from working one. However the guys I lived with last year did something to bypass this, and we had wireless throughout our floor. I can’t recall how they did it…

All phone services seem to work well on campus, but my dormmates with AT&T and Tmobile have nightmares working their cellphones from polycanyon/Cerro. Those of us with Verizon seem to have no problem at all. I’ve been hearing of plans for new towers to aid polycanyon/cerro students with these services but I’m not sure when or if they will ever be in place

vc89- i am really interested in how your roommates managed to bypass the school’s attempt to stop you from using your own router… do u think they used a proxy site or is it more difficult than that?
