Hey,

So, I've been told that the only reliable network on Stanford's campus is AT&T....
I have T-Mobile and as some have said that a few cellphones can just randomly get service, I'm going to bring my phone to Admit Weekend and see if I'm one of them (though I highly doubt it, my phone is kind of sketchy).
If I end up getting AT&T, what is the best way to go about it? I am currently on my family's plan, so do you just break off and join AT&T or would it be wiser for all of us to switch over?
Also, do Stanford students really get a discount from AT&T (again, what a first year told me)?

Anyone with questions regarding cell phone use is welcome to comment on this thread!

i think this is the hierarchy:

at&t
sprint
verizon
tmobile

tmobile is complete **** on campus and caused me a lot of agony my first quarter until i got one of those smartphones that somehow picks up at&t reception even though i still have the tmobile plan.

Haha, yeah. My T-mobile phone picks up other services at random times as well, but I don’t have a smart phone…

sorry, off topic.

I guess I’ll just see what happens at Admit Weekend…

how depressing
and i JUST renewed my contract with t-mobile …
for 2 years…
-_-

we shall see.
i should track down someone with at&t at the ‘stanford in your area’ reception and convince them to let me use their phone to call my parents
;_;

^^This is kind of what happened with my family…:(.

rofl I just got a new contract with Verizon. ><

My daughter had very bad reception on Tmobile at her admit weekend last year . Switched to ATT for the whole family. They give us a $10.00 per month discount for Stanford affiliation. I think you just need a stanford email address to get the discount at the ATT website.

I have Verizon. It’s tolerable, but by no means desirable. Texting works pretty much everywhere, calls are spotty indoors, but generally tend to be fine outdoors.

ATT is head and shoulders above the other carriers.

Verizon sucked at admit weekend. The only places I had service were in the doorway of my dorm room, and at the top of Hoover Tower. And I have a smartphone.
I’m hoping I can parlay this difficulty into an AT&T contract and an iPhone! We’ll see what my parents say. haha

soxfan- I think your parents will go for it. Afterall, they want to hear from you. Had to switch my older son’s plan when he started there. Good luck with the iphone.

Don’t get t-mobile if you want to have friends at Stanford.

…seriously, when you’re inside you don’t get reception.

Yeah Verizon was garbage at Admit Weekend. On the third floor of my dorm I had decent reception but on the ground floor I didn’t get anything. Indoors at the Quad I didn’t get any reception either. I love how in downtown Palo Alto (probably like 2 miles away…) I got perfect reception. Great…now I have to break my Verizon contract to get an ATT one.

AT&T all the way with 18% discount from Stanford

asian75, actually I think I’ve read that the discount is now 15%. Does anyone know anything about Sprint service on campus? Is it tolerable at the very least?

oh I still have 18. my friend had Sprint and it was OK
