Which cell phone company provides the best service at University of Rochester?

Can’t speak for all cell phone companies, but most of the major carriers seem to have decent coverage on campus. Except for the tunnels. No one gets reception in there.

My son had Sprint his freshman year and got a good signal everywhere - his dorm (SueB), and everywhere else on campus. This year he’s in Southside (dorm - upper classmen only) and he was getting a terrible signal in his room. Our contrast was up with Sprint so I switched to Verizon, and he gets a great signal in his dorm and everywhere else on campus too.

Note—Southside is not technically “on” campus. It’s a few blocks south of River campus.

PN–it could be model phone your son had. We have Sprint and some phones seem to have better antennas/reception than others. (Nothing like the 3 of us traveling in the car all whipping out our cells to see who has a signal and who doesn’t. Remarkable variation by model and we all use the same service. Same plan, in fact.)

D has lived on the Quad, in Phase, in Riverview and in South Wedge (off campus)–no reception issues.

I don’t know about Sprint but AT&T doesn’t have LTE coverage in Rochester while Verizon does.

^ UUUUUUUUUUUGH. That blows. AT&T is the only thing that works where I live so I have it. Poop. I wish I could get Verizon here so I’d be set.

Son uses Virgin Mobile. No problems anywhere on campus (tunnels excluded) and in/around Rochester.

Umm, according to ATT’s map, they have high end data coverage for all of Rochester. You can check all cell phone coverage on a web site - cell reception.com. Just type 14623 in the zip code search box and you’ll get a rankings list, which reflects user comments, and links to tower locations and coverage maps. The maps usually open at the national level but you can type in rochester, ny or the zip code to zoom in. The data panel on the ATT map shows the Rochester area has “The areas shown in darkest blue represent AT&T owned HSPA+ network with enhanced backhaul. AT&T’s HSPA+ network is capable of delivering 4G speeds when combined with enhanced backhaul.” That isn’t LTE but it’s about as fast in real world speeds.

My daughter used AT&T with a smart phone for four years without issue.

Verizon is a top choice for Western New York
