Is it true that Singular is the only cell phone service that gets reception at Stanford? I heard this from a current freshman.

I don't mean to piggyback on your thread calikent...but how essential is it to have a cell phone? Is it something you can't do without?

long distance phone calls are too expensive and a family plan lets me talk to my family for free. i am really close to my parents and my 3 littles sisters, so while i could live without a cell phone, it would make the transition of a 2000 mile move a lot easier :)

If so, good thing I have Cingular.

ya sorry - can't spell

I am a Stanford student.
a) Get a cell phone if you don't already have one.
b) VERIZON IS TERRIBLE. GET CINGULAR.

I don't know a single student who doesn't have a cell phone, and yes, Cingular is the only provider with any signal on campus. Stanford made landline service mandatory this year due to declining subscription, so you might be able to make do with that.

def get a cell phone, at least to call your family long distance. and cingular has the best reception by far. i know some people with verizon and they have to search for a decent signal. and by search i mean walk downstairs, out of the dorm into 55 degree weather (winter season), at 9pm, and see if by some miracle they get one or two bars to show up.

thanks everyone

when i was up there my sprint phone worked fine

verizon sucks. i have verizon cause it's the only provider that gets service at my house. however at stanford it blows. the only place i get service is on the 5th floor of green library, where i have to be quiet anyway :( i get 1 bar of service if i litterally hang out the window.
BUTTT i'm sticking to verizon due to cingular sucking at home.
if you ask the verizon people, they tell you they have coverage and even show you a map indicating that there is coverage. LIES, ALL LIES

my friend has sprint, she basically gets no reception when she's in her dorm and i just end up calling her dorm room.

yea, cingular is basically the only choice.
