I am going to Smith this fall and was wondering what cell phone service gets the most reception at Smith. I went to the Open Campus and remember someone saying Verizon, but I just wanted to make sure.

Thanks!

It varies depending on where you live. Parts of the Quad just get horrid reception on everything and the Valley's not exactly a great place for reception anyway.

I use T-Mobile and have no problems, but I have friends who have Verizon.

Verizon is generally really good. I live in the Quad, and my reception is crap (I have T-Mobile). It seems to be good enough elsewhere, though.

what about at&t? thats what i have right now and im hoping to live in the quad or center campus

Not sure, I don't know anyone with At&t.

Honestly, i wouldn't worry too much about your cell service. Certain places (like the quad) just get bad service period, and like I said, the valley is sort of a black hole of cell phone service.

So if you already have a carrier, just stick with them, or go with whatever new one you want, and don't worry too much about it.

My D (who lives in the Quad) calls us on her cell, hangs up, and then we call her back on her room phone. She has Verizon and the cell reception is lousy in her room. Appparently some rooms get slightly better service, though.

I know of several students who have AT&T - -no better or worse than other providers. Sevrice varys depending on where you are on campus.

My daughter has ATT/Cingular. Sometimes she has to stand near the window in her room to keep the connection, but we can talk most of the time without problem.

Just wanting to see if there is any more up to date info on cell phone service. Thanks!

I have Verizon now, and when I visited in the spring, the service seemed excellent throughout the area. I had ATT/Cingular when I was doing my big college tour in the fall, and although it worked around Smith, their overall coverage for New England isn’t great. (I say this mainly because I had absolutely no service in Vermont…)

We have ATT and were fine on our visits and our daughter did an overnight and it seemed to work fine for her.

Our D went with our existing service (ATT/Cingular). She has had good coverage except when walking through the interior her house or in some of the buildings. She will stick with ATT.

D had no problems at Smith & in NoHo with Verizon.

AT&T significantly increased their Vermont cell towers 6 months ago. You can also have your sim card upgraded at no cost. It might or might not make a difference. If your local store doesn’t offer a free upgrade, the AT&T store next to Thornes will take care of you.

Thanks to all!
