Hi, which cell phone provider/s work best in the so cal/claremont area for reception and internet? Thanks.

From all reports (and past postings), Verizon seems to have the best all-around service. T-Mobile also has pretty good service as long as you're near a window in some of the dorms that have concrete block construction.

My daughter is in a stucco dorm and she has to go outside to call us. She uses T-Mobile.

Verizon is the WRONG CHOICE if you go to Pomona.

what about cingular/AT&T?
I kind of sorta wanted to get an iPhone for college...

Is T-Mobile better? or Cingular?

D has had T-Mobile for the past 3.5 years w/o any major problems except having to be near a window on occasion.

Verizon works very well for both my kids at Pomona.

Our son has AT&T and it does not work well in his dorm. This isn't a problem for him as he's rarely there and it gives him a good excuse for not calling home very often. We text if something is urgent then he goes outside the dorm to call us back.

I think Verizon may only be appalling on north campus. I didn't have a problem when I lived on south campus. There is actually a parent initiative to get Verizon to put in another service tower nearby. I hope it happens, because I'm tried of having my calls drop/not even receiving my calls at all!

I streamed live video from my cell phone (Qik) from the field behind Clark on Verizon without any problem. Maybe I was just lucky but I have never had dropped call from my son. Of course he doesn't call very often.

Verizon was the best my freshmen year, but it got pretty bad last year. I'm now on an iPhone/AT&T and don't have any problems at all. Verizon was planning on installing a tower somewhere on the campuses so things may be better now. Some dorms are bad for service in general.

ATT is amazing. Verizon was good for me but some people used to have problems.

Wow, really mixed results. Is there any provider that works well no matter where on campus? I need to decide btwn Verizon and ATT, currently I have T-mobile but i had no reception inside dorm hallways/dorms making T-Mobile somewhat useless

Don’t get T-Mobile.

Cell phone service is just stupid here, obscene almost. T-Mobile and Verizon are the best, and by best I mean mediocre. I have Verizon and if I make an indoors call I get a 50-50 chance of a drop, if I am outside it never drops. T-Mobile is similar in coverage from what I hear. I have tried taking a few cell calls from my desk and just get furious every time, because unless it is a 30-second conversation it will drop. I usually end up going to a balcony or outside to finish the call, or ask them to call back on my landline (you can plug your own phone in for free).

t-mobile does not work well in the south campus - very spotty - many many many dropped calls

T-Mobile works great from the quadrangle northward. Just returned from Commencement and it worked great all weekend. It also worked in Claremont Village at 1st and Harvard.

Tell your children to use skype when they are inside their dorms. They can call anywhere inside the US and Canada for $3 a month and it has call forwarding to their cell phones. If parents sign up for skype also, then the calls are free. My DD ( a Pomona grad) says most of her friends have skype and they use it for IM too.

Does anybody know how well Sprint fares around campus?
