Cell Phone services..

Okay, I've got another question I've never seen addressed on here.. I'm coming to Pitt from Minnesota, and currently, I'm with Verizon Wireless on our family plan with my area's area code. Making calls from Pitt on this plan is basically out of the question because of long distance and such. What is the typical thing for families to do in this situation? Should I go off on my own plan with the Pitt area code? Stay on my family's plan and somehow switch myself to calling from anywhere? We really have no idea what to do, and it'd be great to hear someone else's experience in the situation

My older son went to school in Pittsburgh with Verizon and our local area code (NY). My younger is going to do the same but now with ATT service.

I thought cell was based on number of minutes not distance that all plans were nationwide - but I could be mistaken.

Check with Verizon and see what they say - might be covered on your plan, or as easy as changing to a nationwide plan.

DS has Virgin Mobile. They have an unlimited calls and text plan for $25/month. We found it to be cheaper than signing up for a new plan with other carriers.

I, too, was under the impression that all of Verizon’s plans are country-wide at this point. In addition, if you are calling from one Verizon phone to another, the minutes don’t count. My family has pretty much eliminated long distance charges by using cell phones for all long distance calls.

We have Verizon (Maryland to Pittsburgh). I would call or go to a Verizon store and upgrade your service if needed. Lots of kids have Verizon, so Quiet Type’s point is a good one.

Most plans are nationwide these days. They’re actually cheaper than the old ones. Verizon has good coverage in Pittsburgh, by the way.

Advice: Make sure your plan includes lots of text messages for you! (You can be the only one in your family who has a texting plan if no one else wants it.)
