Which cell phone providers are the best at Cornell? Are there any I should absolutely avoid? I'm thinking about opening T-Mobile, but I want to make sure (or I'll end up with a pretty expensive paperweight...).

Verizon is the best. TMOBILE IS THE WORST. I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE. When I visited for DHW, I got one bar on the Cornell campus with Tmobileand whenever I stepped inside a building I had NO reception. I called T mobile and they said they are going to try to get a tower at Cornell, but Verizon is the best. However, Verizon may not be working either because last week (I think) a repairman in Ithaca cut like 120 power lines, which severly weakened all cellphone companies' reception-especially verizon's.

I was there last week, my phone reception was fine on Verizon.

Thanks@tun. I will switch right sooner than later!

i have t-mobile. crap. they better get that tower up before this coming fall

How is Cingular out there?

When the guy called me after having sent some men to Itacha, he told me I could switch my service for free. He didn't say they would place a tower in Cornell@parahx.

verizon is the best. t-mobile is terrible. i have cingular, and its acceptable. i dont get service sometimes, but its not enough where i feel i have to switch. depends where you live tho. whenever im in balch, i have no service so if i lived there i wud have to switch.

I have sprint... I just set it to send/receive calls from the verizon network :p

The highest I've ever gotten on Sprint was 2 bars

if you do have a phone that can use other networks, then you should be fine...

but yeah t-mobile is the worst cell phone...

verizon has a monopoly on the cornell campus...because my t-mobile worked fine on central campus, but as soon as you go to north it stops working...

verizon just built a brand new reception tower on north campus atop mary donlon hall...just get verizon :< but once t-mobile gets their tower on campus...i'm switching :D, there's no one cheaper than t-mobile ^__^

Ranking based on experience...
1. Verizon
2. Cingular/ AT&T
3. Sprint
4. T-Mobile
5. All others (don't even bother)

Although Verizon is expensive, it is really your best deal. They just put a new tower up on North Campus, so you get reception anywhere on North Campus (4-5 bars), even in basements and elevators. To cut down the price, if you sign up at the nearby mall, they give you 20% off your monthly bill. Verizon also works great on the rest of the campus.
Cingular is good and cheaper, but it's kinda spotty. There will be spots where you'll find you have no service.
Sprint is good on central, but again, spotty on North. I have several friends who have Sprint, and they often miss calls because they can't get a signal. That being said, some of my friends who lived in the low rises didn't have this problem to the same degree.
T-mobile--ha! Now there's a joke. If, you're lucky, you might get one bar, but in general, it doesn't work.

I just learned that my dorm rooms has a private phone. I am wondering if having a cell phone on campus is really necessary. What do you think? Would I really miss my cell phone?

How do you go off of Verizon's network if you have Sprint - Do you use roaming???

yes you roam. i think there's about a hundred of these threads already, can an admin just make one sticky?
