cell phones, ipods and guitars for first year cadets

My s is applying for admission in fall of 09. Can anyone tell me if first year cadets are allowed to use cell phones and ipods in their rooms? Can a first year cadet bring guitar to the academy? Thx!

Cell phone -- yes, after Beast. They may not work in the barracks though.
Ipod --- First semester maybe yes, maybe no, it depends upon the company he is in.
Guitar -- yes, but don't bring it to R-day. We took our son's guitar to him on A-day.

thanks WAMom68. I looked in the cadet life section of the admissions website but didn't see any info on these.

Cell phone - yes. All the rooms have landlines with unlimited free long distance.
Cell phone coverage is spotty - sometimes one can text but not call.

My plebe is not supposed to listen to her Ipod. Or any music. They are allowed to watch movies on the weekend. This may be Company dependent.

What?!!!!!! Are you kidding me?!!!! My son has been using an MCI calling card to call long distance from his room.

Oh gosh - you didn't know??

They did this so our cadets could call us everyday. Doesn't he call you everyday?
I hope he is not still using a calling card.

I consider myself lucky because he calls me once a week. :D

Cell phone, yea, good luck getting reception. It depends more on the phone than on the barracks, though.

Ipod...most companies can, not mine. We can't watch movies or listen to music at all (even though First Captain sent out a memo stating Plebes had media privileges after duty hours on the weekend...)

Guitar...yea. One or two kids had theirs through the summer, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it. A-Day is a good option.

Phones - yeap, free long distance. Don't count on daily phone calls ;)

yep - mine calls only when she needs something.

free long distance? The Corps Has...

geez, doesn't mean they use it!
Actually nothing is "free." Everyone's account is charged a set fee each month for this service.

Ah yes - reminds me of an overheard conversation:
Big Sister: How many sets of uniforms did they give you
Plebe: They don't GIVE us any. They ISSUE stuff.
Big Sister: confused look whatever
Plebe: We have to PAY for all the stuff they issue us.

So - yep, the unlimited long distance is issued - LOL.
Not that they use it. Mine still emails me (with a list) or sends me a random text message - when she thinks of something but doesn't want a conversation. The timing is, however, impeccable - usually occurring just when I am wondering if she is still alive - ;)
