Cell Phones

I've been using a tracfone which is the buy a card for minutes and you just renew whenever. But from what I've been hearing is that you use your cell phone a lot in college. Is this true? Because if that's the case I'm thinking I need to consider spending the money and getting a service plan.

I used mine a lot in high school, but not as much in college. That was mostly because most people I needed to talk to were in my building. If they weren't there, they were probably in class or some other place where they can't be disturbed.

It depends on the person and your living situation, I guess.

Should I just forget about a land phone and add the money to my cell phone minutes?

That would be a good idea. Make sure you clear that with any roomates you may have though haha.

Next year, all four of us in our apartment have cell phones and are not getting a land line at all.

I can't think of a single person here who uses a landline. I'm sure there's some, but almost everyone uses cellphone exclusively.

Get rid of your TracPhone.

Get Mobile ESPN! If you like sports, then you'll love Mobile ESPN! The MVP cell phone is free with a mail-in-rebate. Plans start as low as 39.99 a month, which includes 400 anytime minutes.. plus free nights and weekends. Not to mention all of the great sports content, like GameCast, scores, news, alerts, answer guy, and more.

Call and you just might talk to me. =)

I prefer a phone that can give me stocks and news over sports any day lol. Which is funny considering I'm playing lacrosse in college.

I didn't get a land line until recently when my cell phone coverage became non-existant in my apartment. That's the only reason I think you'd benefit from a land line on top of the cell phone. I know it's sad, but the cell phone is pretty much a necessity now a days, I'd invest in a good plan, preferably the same company that your parents have (free mobile - mobile = good!).

Look for a good program that allows long distance calls (home, mom & dad, remember them? :) ) and free to other network users. We've been able to keep our costs a constant (no big bills) for the last 3 years. I use the one that starts with a V, but look into any you like and find what will work for you. Hey maybe mom & dad will pay for it if it's a family plan.

I will be making long distance calls (parents), would like to have internet, and free nights and weekeneds. What's a good service that can offer that at an affordable price.

Hi kinglin --

I actually didn't get a cell phone until March of my first year! (Crazy eh?) My mom's convinced that if you use a cell phone you'll die of cancer so I never got one. Anyway, cell phones are basically a necessity in college and so I decided I just had to have one. However, I don't have a credit card so I had to find a good pay as you go plan, and I found a Verizon one I LOVE called EasyPay. It's only a bit more expensive than a regular service plan, but it's 90% like a regular service plan. I get 450 mins per month for $50/month, free nights&weekends, free calling to anyone who uses Verizon. Plus when I send txt messages or buy ringtones from the Verizon store, that cost gets deducted from my $50; I'm not paying extra. I didn't like minute by minute prepaid, so this was perfect for me. My phone (motorola v276) has Internet on it.

I'm a stereotypical girl in the sense that I talk A LOT on my phone, yet I always have a lot of money left on my phone each month (it does transfer over) because with most people at college, the phone calls are quick "Hey, I'll be there in five" type of conversations; if you wanted to talk, you just meet up. I did talk quite a lot to my friends outside of college, but I just called them after 9pm, or they were on Verizon

You can also investigate the wonders of Skype, which is basically free Internet telephone. Skype.com; more people need to know about it

I don't use my cell phone much - maybe 100 minutes a month. I'm on a shared plan with my family, and, while the carrier we're with has the best coverage in town, it's still spotty in places. If I'm going to talk with my friends, I do it in person, on a land line or on AIM.

Check with your school to see if you get discounts on cell phone plans. I'm actually thinking about getting mobile ESPN because I'm a sports guru. 400 minutes anytime w/ free nights and weekends + updates on sports news seems like a good deal.

skype is amazing.

yeah-- i use my cell phone a LOT since being in college. in hs, it'd basically be off all week, and on during the weekends. in college when there's more free time, there's a lot of "hey what are you up to? wanna grab lunch" type conversations and keeping in touch w/ family and friends from home.

Mobile ESPN is a good service for all of the reasons you listed above, vupreuss06.

Pros: free & unlimited ESPN content which is scores, gamecast, news, favorite columnists, favorite time information, fantasy manager, personalized alerts, and free answer guy(immediate text and phone response for any sports question). free nights and weekends after 9pm. 400 anytime minutes w/ no roaming or long distance charges. No activiation fee. Free phone(sanyo MVP which is an awesome phone, camera and camcorder and extra memory slot..get a 2GB memory chipp and hold up to 400 MP3s) with mail in rebate. Great customer support (take my word for it)

Cons: Text messaging costs extra, the contract is 2 years w/ a 250$ termination fee, no mobile to mobile (although this is something we are planning on adding).. video clips cost extra.. internet access cost extra...no family plans...no free incoming calls which is a big con, IMO..39.99/month (which is generally compettitive but still pricey).

I have actually sold a number of phones to college students. Although, make sure you have sufficient credit. Students tend to fail their credit check more often than older people.

My advice -- if you REALLY like sports and actually find yourself in situations where you want to go to ESPN.com or find scores but can't...then it's a great service. The biggest thing, IMO, is to take advantage of the free nights and weekends. Meet those two criterion and you're golden.

I don't know anyone who doesn't have a cell phone.... I know a lot of people.

I know of one person who sometimes uses his landline in his dorm... sometimes
