cell phones

to all current dartmouth students..

i was wondering, which cell phone service do you guys use?? Which one has the best coverage at Dartmouth?

i'm planning on getting a new cell phone plan and i just checked tmobile only to find out that tmobile doesn't have coverage in dartmouth.

and...

i<3dartmouth

so far, i've only found verizon to have coverage in the area.. any other services??

Daughter uses Verizion, gets great reception from Hanover. One thing to keep in mind is that you get free long distance from your room phone. She rarely uses her cell phone (only when the room phone is busy). Since her bill coes home every month I can tell you first hand, she is not using her cell minutes in Hanover. we kept our nationwide calling plan 400 minutes, free long distance, nights and weekends, no roaming charges (also if any one calls her from home, it is a local call) 39.99 plus I get a 23% corporate discount through my job. On the campus, you really are not going to see a lot of people usig cell phones because almost everyone blitzes.

I don't use one. I am against cell phones on principle.

What if you got stranded in the snow or something?

My mum used to make me carry an old cell phone. Everytime I got stranded in the snow, it froze, and I found myself hitchhiking / walking home.

Yeah, I'm not really hot about cell phones either.

i hate t-mobile. sigh.

Cingular...I use it, it works great. Although in reality you will find yourself using it very very seldomly up there (I only use mine to call the 'rents).

I currently have a Cingular ... we're thinking of switching over to Verizon, but we're not sure what will be the best.

I'm glad I'm seeing this thread now, rather than later.

Joey

hey joey. are u a current dartmouth student?? b/c i thought cingular doesn't have reception in dartmouth..

I just said it does in the post above his...

Xan is right that you will rarely use your cell phone except for when you are calling home (usually during travel). For the most part a I stated earlier, you will probably take advantage of the fact that you have unlimited free long distance phone service from your room phone courtesy of the schoo. The only time my daughter uses her cell, if she needs to phone home and someone is on the room phone, or she is enroute homw. If changing your plan involes having early termination fees, then you need to decide if it worth the cost. If I did not feel the need (for my own peice of mind) for her to have a cell in the event of emergencies, I would probably pocket the $45 each month that I am paying Verizon for services she rarely uses during the school year.

sorry xan, didn't see ur post.. my mind is doing cartwheels rite now!! yay!!

Sorry guys about pestering you about the cell phone questions. Its just that i cannot imagine not needing a cell phone.

ex.
What if ur friend is across campus and u guys want to meet up or something. Or what about on Sat. night and you guys are out partying and stuff and get separted? Or what if ur looking for a party?

Maybe, its just that i live in Cali and freakin ALL MY FRIENDS live so far away that we need cellulars??

maybe?? i'm just gonna go to dimensions and check this out for myself..

mumbling "wow, we don't need cell phones." scratches head

Totally understand where you're comming Super, its like im totally dependent on my cell phone for communication.

Does anybody have T-Mobile, do you get good reception in Hanover?

i know that with t-mobile i have to stand on my left leg and jump up and down with my right arm held out in front of me-- next to my window-- in order to get reception sometimes. and i live in NYC! im used to it though :)

Not yet .. I got a likely letter, and I went up there last summer (Cingular didn't have any reception, lol) ... so I'm trying to figure out what I should do for my new plan.

Joey

You are not really going to find a lot of people walking around Hanover talking on cell phones (it's actually kind of frowned upon) because people blit, and you can pick up a blitz anywhere on campus

sybbie, can you please explain what a blitz is... i've heard of that whole blitzing thing but i dont quite understand it... :(

Blitz is Dartmouth's version of email (an email client that was developed before email itself). The word itself can be used as either a noun or a verb. Every student, faculty, staff etc. has a blitzname (i.e. email address) and almost everyone checks their blitz all the time, thanks to the prevalence of the public terminals and the campus-wide wireless network. Thus, if you blitz someone there is a good chance that that person will see your blitz soon and respond, so trying to locating people by calling their cell phones is not as necessary as at some other places. I agree that Saturday nights is a time when calling people's cells would seem more conducive, but I've found that as long as you're going out to the frats you have an excellent chance of running into the person you're looking for or at least other friends even without calling anyone.
