Cell Phones

how about
CELL PHONES !!!???

what’s the best advice for cell phones…

pre- and post- BCT…

bring on I-day?
have parents bring/mail?

and what’s the specs. on the best service provider, signal, etc. ?
ok to have a phone like a “blackberry”, etc. ?

Had to switch son to att. verizon is very spotty on campus. I suggest NOT bringing phone to BCT. It will be confiscated and some were not returned.

You can't have a phone till parent's weekend. I wouldn't bring it. As of last weekend, I currently have a blackberry pearl now. I love it already. :)

Yeah, verizon is sketchy in the dorms.

If you bring it on I-day, just put it in a secure location in your bag (that will be turned in until Acceptance day).

Potter had great service with sprint until they made her move rooms a couple of weeks ago. Now she has resorted to calling on her roommates Cingulair phone to get through. She says her phone works great in Fairchild though, just not her room. Next she'll want ATT and an I-Phone for recognition.

Verizon reception is definitely terrible. At summer seminar I had to hide behind the window curtain to be able to get enough reception to call my parents, and if I moved 7 feet backwards to where my bed was there wasn't even digital service at all so I couldn't text. If I was to go to USAFA I would definitely switch. Cingular or ATT seems to be a good choice.

I have verizon, it seems to work well in the room i am in now, but last year I had to walk outside to be able to get anything. It's really good back home on the East Coast, but it's really iffy out here (at least in the Cadet Area where you'd be spending most of your time.)

I have T-mobile and the room I'm in now is the first time I've had trouble with it. Then, of course, I am in a corner room on the 2nd floor meaning there is a LOT of steel and concrete between me and the tower.

You would think they would let the providers in to place repeaters by now.

I have cingular. Works great most of the time. Only time I've had problems with it is occasionally while using my BlueTooth headset.

ds, I don't think its a repeater problem. If you're outside here, then reception not an issue. The way the dorms are built, if you are on the inside of the quads it can be difficult to get reception because of the building.

Just sour grapes on my part becuase she had such great reception in her old room. She's in Denver with her Aunt today, and has the stupid thing turned off. I think she's trying to catch up on her sleep.

so... i gather that everyone has problems w/ reception, depending on where you are.. cingular seems to be best?

I was told Verizon and T-mobile were the best coming here. But, they all have problem areas.

From my experience, verizon is not good, unless you are standing on the T-zo. I have to stand in particular places near my window to get decent reception (all three of my rooms have been this way).

Cingular/At&t has service pretty much everywhere all over the mountains, USAFA, and colorado springs. The only place I haven't had service in CO was on the doolie retreat in the mountains and on the ski slopes. But everywhere else, works like a charm.

It's really easy to get the military discount for cingular too. All you have to do is prove you have a military email adress and they send you a confirmation and you can get up to 18% off your bill.
