Cell phones

don't bring it. people hide them, but seriously, it's not THAT hard to go without it for a few months, and it's not worth it to get your classmates (and of course, yourself) in trouble when you get caught. wait 'til after recognition to bring it.

oh, the answer to the question is, recognized cadets are allowed to have ipods :)
if you have anything fun, chances are it's not allowed before recognition. except legos. my squad leadership, after much deliberation, ruled that legos are, in fact, legal for 4th class cadets to possess here at the Academy ;) lol, yes, that was for real.

Correct me if i'm wrong, But iPods aren't allowed for us until after Recognition. Any sort of personal music players are part of the wonderful experience of restricted things as a freshman and a cadet of USAFA.

thanks missmuff. but i'm kinda lost on all the labeling, what does it mean to be a "recognized cadet"? does that mean that you completed BCT and after Parent's Weekend? or what? i'm so lost... lol. I'm trying to learn all this stuff before I'm at the Academy

Recognition is a three day training event held in March. It's a grueling mental and physical session and is really the end of your four degree year. After that, you've earned back a bunch of privileges and are treated like a real person again! :)

Lego's? Really?
Please tell me that no one has Star Wars lego sets and that they have battles with them, because that would be too great!

and what's the policy on digital cameras? is that a no for first-years?

nope, you can have cameras after basic. it's a pretty good way to keep alot of memories that you would've normally forgotten about.. i like to take pictures when i can :)

sorry, bbshorty, i remember not understanding anything ;)
here's a little timeline that helped me:
inprocessing, you enter. you're a basic cadet. you have practically no privileges. 'nuff said ;)

after basic, but before you're accepted, are transition days, and it's basically like a weekend, a real weekend (even though it's weekdays, lol) after basic. you still have to travel with an upperclassman and go to briefings, but i just remember sleeeeping ;) and you get a computer, so many people spend hours emailing/chatting.

Acceptance day is in August, and you officially become a member of the cadet wing. you're now a cadet fourth class. you can wear your own glasses/contacts (a biggie for me...i rocked the bcg's during basic) if you don't know what bcg's are, google image "birth control glasses." you can also have a camera now, go places by yourself (during basic, you are never alone), and gasp wake yourself up in the morning with an ALARM CLOCK (as opposed to yelling and door kicking).

parents' weekend is labor day weekend. most squads will give you your phone on the weekends from then on out (but again, it depends on the squad).

prog is mid-october. it's when you get your "progress report" on grades and find out where you officially stand. it's also when you can possibly go on academic probation, or ac-pro. if you are not on ac-pro, most squads will give you your phone back indefinitely.

as petko said, recognition is in march. it is the culmination of 4 deg year. it's all very mysterious, and we are all eagerly anticipating/dreading it. ;) after recognition, we get many privileges, such as walking and talking on the terrazzo (rather than running the strips), using acronyms, being called by our first names!!!!!!, carrying our backpacks on our backs, wearing whatever pj's we want, etc. it sounds ridiculous, but you'll understand when you get here, i promise :D

hope this cleared it up a little. never be afraid to ask ;)

can't wait for recognition!!

its good to try to get to know the lingo before you get here. Recognition, prog, dark ages... :D

alright sweet, thanks a lot missmuff, you're post definitely helped me understand everything

Remind me what the Dark Ages are.
And there's also 40 days, the 40 days before recognition starts.
I wonder how that'll affect us with Wing Staff living in such close proximity to us (I think they're practically down the hall way). Or how everything training wise will change.

the Dark Ages is after Christmas when everybody is depressed because we won't be going home anytime soon, and it's dark outside when going to breakfast/class, and is already dark by the time class finishes. The weather is usually pretty "dark" also.

yep, pretty much sums it up.

Everything ramps up next semester culminating with recognition. Get pumped for it!
