i'm getting a new cell phone plan, and i was wondering if it's better to get cingular or verizon at stanford? i'd like to stay with verizon but i heard cingular has much better service on campus, so i'm not too sure right now but i'd like to get it done before i get to california.

also, does stanford have some kind of deal with cingular?

if u go to cingular.com and type in your stanford e-mail adress where it says "Where do you work?", you can access Cingular Premier, where you get a 15% discount off your monthly bill and other discounts

I agree that Cingular is really good at Stanford; I've only had trouble with reception once while on campus I think. I didn't know about the discount, though. Sweet!

Does anyone know if the 15% discount will work for existing family plans since I don't want to start my own cingular plan just to get the discount.

I checked with the local Cingular store and they said they will apply the discount to the family plan--for the first phone. So it would be the major part of the bill. You might have to get your name added to the account. You can also buy your equipment for 50% off if you need anything like accessories.

Cingular/AT&T is the only cell phone provider with towers on campus, so every other provider will have spotty to no reception. My friends who have Verizon have to go outside their dorm/classroom to even pick up any signal, and they get missed calls all the time. If you go online or to the Cingular store near campus on El Camino Real and Page Mill Road, you can get a 15% discount on your plan.

for all you students who are moving into the US from other countries, anyone know if there is any possibility of obtaining a good cingular plan that facilitates calling abroad?

Cingular has several international calling plans. When I went to one of their stores near campus they had a brochure with the different plans--if I remember correctly, some can be tailored for specific countries. They don't list them on their web site so you could either e-mail them now or just wait until you"re at Stanford. Until you get set up with Cingular, you could use an international calling card.

Starting this school year, every dorm room will have a phone line and a phone, so it's much cheaper to use a calling card to make international calls rather than using your cell phone. I would also highly recommend switching to Cingular if you have another provider now. Like I said before, my friends who have Verizon have to go outside their dorm/classroom to even pick up any signal, and they get missed calls all the time.

nope. i talked to a current student who has t mobile and says that it was horrible to have on campus. it doesnt work at all in building, and even outside you have to search for a signal because there are a lot of dead zones. EVERY student i've talked to has said get cingular.

strange. t-mobile worked fine for me on campus when my dad and i visited back in april. i had no problems calling my dad's phone or my mom back in texas.
