I was wondering which cell phone provider is the best on campus. I currently have T-mobile, but I have heard mixed reviews about its performance. Any recommendations? Thanks.

verizon was good when i visited

I have AT&T and had 3 to 4 bars the whole time and only lost service on the drive there through all those ridiculous mountains.

T-Mobile is the only provider I've heard bad things about. I use Verizon and it's golden, except on occasion when I venture into the basement of a building closer to the edge of campus.

Back in the day, when I was a freshman (04-05 school year), cell phone reception was generally pretty crummy and I remember someone at the time saying that T-Mobile had better reception than the other cell phone providers. This has changed dramatically over the course of the last few years, however, as they've added more towers, etc. to the area, and now pretty much everyone gets decent reception on campus. This explains the upsurge in the popularity of cell phones at Dartmouth over the course of the past few years (back when I was starting at D cell phones were still kinda frowned upon within the rules of social etiquette and blitz was even more popular than it is now (based on mostly on my empirical observations, obviously)). The more recent classes are much more apt to use cell phones on campus, IMO, because precisely because cell phone service has been reliable since they first got to campus.

I should also note that I have Cingular/AT&T and my reception tended to be slightly worse than what people with other providers got (although this seems to be a broader trend for Cingular).

If I bring a cell phone from overseas, how do I hook it up with a US provider? It has a sim card slot.

Unless T-Mobile still has SIM cards, most providers have switched over to another system. I know that I have to get rid of my Unicel phone and get a Verizon Wireless one.. which means no more SIM card.

You could probably just get a new phone and transfer your numbers and info to it... of course, find a provider that has good international rates. It doesn't really matter what phone you have because the tower that your signal goes to will determine the rate you pay.
Either that, or get a prepaid phone/calling card. Whatever works best for you.

AT&T still uses sims. But the easiest route would probably be just setting up a contract with an American company.

Oh, hey there! Wow, there's a lot of fly-in kids on CollegeConfidential now

I'm under the impression that most people just blitz each other anyway.. @ the OP.. you might want to get a phone just to call home or to friends who are less e-mail inclined and facebook prejudiced..

Unfortunately less so now. I think the '10s were the last class to seriously use blitz for a lot of communication. The '9s are the ones who remember when cellphones were stigmatized. It's pretty close to de rigeur for '11s and '12s to have cellphones.

I have T-Mobile, and I've never had a problem with it.

does anyone know if att's 3g network works at dartmouth? i know dartmouth has like ubiquitous internet on campus but im thinking that's not accessible to just any visitor (im going to dimensions).

The speedy Dartmouth Secure wireless network is only usable by students and faculty, but there's also the Dartmouth Public network which works just fine -- just a bit slower.

Wow, it’s even worse than I thought.

S has T-mobile because it is cheapest to keep him on the family plan. There never seems to be a problem with it. (Other than the fact that he doesn’t answer the phone much of the time…but that’s another matter! MO–OM!!)

Verizon has worked well for my senior DD–doesn’t drop calls and the reception is terrific.
