I heard Verizon and T-mobile are great. Since I'll live in Lawrence, has anyone used Verizon or T-mobile while in Lawrence? Can ppl receive calls in their rooms? Any experience/advice/suggestion are welcome!
Thx a million!

I'd go with Verizon, it has much better coverage in that general area (the five college region) from my experience.

My D asked around before arriving at Smith and got a strong consensus on Verizon. She's used it and has had absolutely no problems.

D just said: "T-Mobile is one of those that varies by house but you really want Verizon becasue it works everywhere."

thank you both!
I went to their websites only to find Verizon is really expensive. It seems like i should gather more info before making a decision

Well worth the price if you want to be able to call a friend from anywhere on campus :) I had Verizon in Albright- usually worked quite well. Though I can't guarantee 6 bars- usually 4.

D agrees T-Mobile is more money. But cheaper isn't any good if it doesn't work when you need it. Fwiw, her cell phone bill is her own expense and the dollars she could save would be her own.

if you go to smith.dailyjolt.com there is a "cell phone guide" link. the page has a ton of links but search around; it is there.

I'd also consider how much you plan on using your phone. I rarely use my cell phone, preferring to use my room phone with a calling card and therefore my cell phone is pretty much only used when I travel. However, it didn't work at all in Northampton (I'm not sure if it was the phone, the plan [Cingular] or my location, but if I tried to use the phone at all it told me something along the lines of it not being a valid number). My sister has TMobile, which I've found has the best rates when it comes to prepaid minutes, and I plan on testing her phone out in various places when I get back on campus. Hopefully it works well enough that I will switch sometime soon. My cell phone is four years old as it is and I've dropped it so many times it doesn't always work.

My mom went to Verizon a few weeks ago when she was in the area and said I need prepaid minutes, and the salesperson started ignoring her questions and talking about how their most economical plans were $50 or $70 a month. Definitely not what we're looking for. I'd definitely consider your expected phone use before buying a plan. I'd hate to be on a monthly plan when I'm only making one phone call a month.

If you do plan on using your cell phone frequently, Verizon could be the way to go.
