Cellphone provider?

What works best in U of M? or which one is best used by the students?

For students coming from overseas , I hear T Mobile is the best , as you dont have to buy a new phone , something you have to do with Verizon.

My daughter is at orientation now. She has AT&T, and we have had great reception whenever we have called. She says she gets reception everywhere.

at&t and t-mo use GSM so as long as you have a tri band phone it'll work on any network, but verizon uses CDMA (diff technology, has its own phones)

any GSM phone will work for you (since ppl say at&t and t-mo are both good at umich)

at&t/cingular gets terrible service on campus...i would go for tmobile or verizon

My son just graduated from there and still lives in Ann Arbor. ATT&T/Cingular works perfectly. I know because of the number of minutes he spends on it. Except in the dorm where nothing worked except in one corner of the bathroom. But that was four years ago. Things maybe have improved since then.

How about Sprint?

I was wondering about Sprint too, especially since it has the rollover benefit.

After checking various message boards (Facebook & College Confidential), it seems like Sprint/Nextel and Cingular/At&t are the best.

Though, I'm in the same boat, waiting to switch carriers in a month or so.

For those of you who have a Cellular One national plan and want to keep it (our situation) I found out that Cell One uses the Cingular/AT&T towers, so your service will be the same as those carriers. Also, Cellular One was recently purchase by AT&T, so you will end up being AT&T soon anyway (iphone?).

Wow, there seems to be a lot of variability. My D was at orientation a couple of weeks ago and our Verison sounded great. She said another kid with Cingular/AT&T was having problems from East quad. I read in a cell phone review that t-mobil and Verison had the best coverage in the midwest. I don't know what to think!?!

reception outdoors is fine with all the carriers

reception in dorms is pretty bad no matter what

that being said, verizon, cingular, and tmobile are all fine

yes reception is fine with all carriers outdoors..however, for those going into their first year (and probably living in a dorm), cingular/at&t did not work. calls would either cut out or you wouldn't have service (and couldn't receive calls).

i only know this because a lot of my friends had cingular, while i had verizon (which worked in every dorm i've been to).

T MOBILE! 10char

Friend had Sprint and it worked well even in Dorms. We now have Sprint and daughter had no problem during orientation. Sprint does not have Roll Over but they do have free nights 7pm to 7 a.m. At&t has roll over.

sprint operates on CDMA (same with verizon)

If anyone is from around Michigan or really the midwest, don't get Centenniel. Everytime I make a call, it puts me in roaming, then charges me huge fees for it.

I have sprint and it has great signal..even in the dorms. A lot of my friends couldn't get reception in the dorms unless they stood by windows (I'm not sure what they have) but sprint doesnt have this problem :)

Just wanted to clarify:

My parents want to get a family share plan with one of the Big 4 (verizon, spring, tmobile, cingular). I would be using one of these lines at school, while my parents will be using the other line in another state. Does this affect the charges or coverage of the cell phone plan?

Also, can any current student give an educated guess as to what is the most popular/used cell phone provider on campus?

illinifan:

1.go with any provider besides AT&T (cingular), choose which plans/phones you like best
2.no, the charges won't conflict because unlike land lines, cell phones are charged the same anywhere you call from (or to) in the US
