During my stay at Rieber Terrace for orientation I realized that cingular doesn't get good reception around that area (would work but only if I was next to the window) What's your take on this issue? or did it just happen to me. If it is actually a valid problem, what carrier would you guys recommend?

AT&T sucks. Reception is very bad in UCLA.

verizon is the same way in RT.

AT&T is the top two. Verizon being the other one. T-mobile absolutely sucks at UCLA. dead spots everywhere. cant say anything for sprint because i dont know anyone that has it.

I'd say reception is generally on the lower end at UCLA (particularly inside buildings), with some carriers better than other.

What's weird is that reception is good at Summit and Rieber, but poor at Rieber Terrace and Vista.

i got pretty good reception with sprint on the 2nd floor of terrance. My roommate used verizon and had good reception as well. My other roommate had cingular and was forced to talk very very close to the window.

Really? I have cingular as well, I didn't miss any calls because of lack of reception. I got it everywhere in my room (4th floor), the only times I didn't have reception was in the hallway but sometimes I did and sometimes I didn't.

I remember I had reception in my OCs room(8th floor), but not my floor(6th floor). I started getting reception in the lobby/Rieber Court. I hope I have reception during the school year, as I will be in RT. I use T-mobile.

MrSpam:

Sorry, but T-Mobile is going to be a terrible carrier for you, anywhere on campus.

Cingular and Verizon are the best, in my opinion.

man this is gonna suck then I still have t mobile for another 1 and half years on my contract...

i have t-mobile,
it works FINE.

except in most of courtside.

t mobile sucks. hahah i really couldnt get any reception anywhere i had to walk under or near the most random places just to get like 1 bar.

hrmf. i can make calls in the elevators in boelter and knudsen and pab, and also in c3, c4 and the courtyard.

maybe its the phone

so between AT&T/Cingular and Verizon it seems that Verizon is the winner? :P

haha sooskay i had EXACTLY your problem at orientation last year. ended up practically making a windowseat out of a dresser just so i could sit by the window to talk... so annoying!

i still have cingular but instead of my old dual-band samsung phone, i now have a quad-band sony ericcson. MUCH MUCH better. in de neve i was losing reception practically every 2 minutes with the old phone, now it's only happened once. this year i'll be in summit and i hope my luck doesn't run out...

so if you're stuck with cingular, make SURE you've got a quad-band. or at least a tri-band. if your phone is new most likely it already is. but old phones... you should upgrade.

Lived in Sunset Village last year, using Sprint. Had no reception problems unlike my roomies who were using Cingular. My 2 cents.

the number of bands has nothing to do with reception. its the phone's reception that improved.

cingular and verizon are pretty much neck and neck. theres some places on campus where verizon will be dead. neither one will work EVERYwhere, but both are better than tmobile in terms of coverage.

your phone as A HUGE effect on reception. number of bands don't matter, but on Cingular you should have at least a dual band 850/1900 phone. the other bands (tri/quad) are just 900/1800 mhz frequencies for worldwide roaming and are of absolutely no use in north america.

on cingular, sony ericssons (the w810i) are among the top performers in the reception department. the older 2G razrs were above average as well. the current "king" of reception seems to be the 3G motorola razr v3xx. samsungs arent known for good reception, but they're pretty. :)

also, the way you hold your phone can also affect reception/call quality. no, really. your hand might be blocking the antenna.

i would get a nokia off ebay, they're known for their great RF

my nokia can get 4 bars where my razr only gets 2

ahh yes, forgot about the trusty nokias. they are indeed great for RF.

well, the band thing seemed to be important to someone at cingular who i talked to. they upgraded the network so it was either something to do with the number of bands, or else the new sim cards they're using.

and i've now got the sony ericsson w810i- it is so great! amazing reception plus it's one spiffy phone/camera/music player/etc etc. i'm so happy with it! :)
