Does anyone have some information about these two schools? Daughter is interested in studying education and her guidance counselor told us to check these schools out when we are in Michigan. Any information would be greatly appreciated. From what I can tell from searching their websites, 90% of those who attend are instate students.

^^ Education —> EMU, hands down!!

Thank you Sparkeye7. From what I have read online, they have a well respected education program. Can you give me any more information regarding campus, student life, etc. We are out of state, so wonder about campus life on weekends. We are also looking at Michigan State.

I here EMU is great for education though at my high school I know of at least two staff who attended CMU.

EMU is located in Ypsi, a quiet little town/city not far from the neighboring city of Ann Arbor, where many EMU students would hangout on the wkends. EMU was founded as one of Michigan’s normal colleges back in the days. Therefore, the educational program has had a great history and reputation in teaching. Sportswise, it’s a member of the MAC, though not of Big Ten caliber, it is rasing in stature as of late, especially in football.

Nonetheless, if MSU is being thrown into the equation…, there would really be no comparison between the three schools (MSU, EMU & CMU) in terms of the overall academic reputation ------------> Go State, hands down!! lol As a proud State alumnus myself, our education program is on par if not better than UM imho as one of the top programs in the country. The campus atmosphere is also unparalled, one of a kind in the state of Michigan. East Lansing is the quintessential college town, the campus is literary a vibrant park filled with endless cultural activities and always welcoming to any visitors except those blue fans from Ann Arbor. :p

Check out some of these MSU campus videos:

Wow-great information Sparkeye and Coolbrezze. We are visiting Michigan State and thought we’d visit a few other schools in the area. I am not sure if we can do a tour at Eastern Michigan though or atleast it isn’t an option for the week we will be there. Will call school tomorrow and double check.
Looking forward to seeing Michigan State-have heard lots of good things and education program is well respected. U of M is not even on the radar because of it being so super selective. Might visit the campus if time allows though. Will say that Central does seem to be far removed and more difficult to get to from airport. We have scheduled a tour, but might rethink that.

Let’s be honest here. EMU is located in the worst part of Washtenaw County, CMU is located in the middle of nowhere in Isabella County, and MSU is the “quintessential college town” of Ingham County. If I were the OP I’d go to EMU and take the bus down Washtenaw Avenue from my apartment in Ann Arbor.

Michigan State University students are a select group of academically motivated women and men. They come from every county in Michigan, every state in the nation, and more than 126 countries around the world. They form a diverse community, representing a wide range of ethnic, racial, political, and religious backgrounds.

MSU is considered one of the most beautiful university campuses in the nation. The Red Cedar River flows through it, connecting the traditional ivy-covered brick buildings of the original campus with the newer facilities, such as the state-of-the-art science building, the athletic complex, the medical and law colleges, and the Wharton Center for the Performing Arts. At the heart of the campus—and of MSU’s land grant heritage—is a magnificent 140-year-old horticultural garden, its park-like beauty setting the tone for all landscaping throughout the campus.

East Lansing is a thriving, welcoming community a “quintessential college town.” It neighbors on the state capital of Lansing, and the economic strength of the area is based on three General Motors plants and state government, as well as the university.

MSU’s F-RIB To Have Major Local Impact

More than 200 scientists gathered to discuss future experiments at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams – or FRIB.

Still 8 years away from completion…

“This will be one of the most powerful facilities in the world,” says FRIB Consultant David Waymire.

Scientists from around the globe are already planning how they’ll use MSU’s new Facility for Rare Isotope Beams. More than 200 researchers met at the Marriott Hotel in East Lansing to discuss future experiments.

“It’s important for supernova explosions and why gold has been made in the universe,” says German GSI Lab Research Director Karlheinz Langanke.

“We’re interested at looking at new isotopes for cancer therapy and imaging,” says Washington University Assistant Professor Suzanne Lapi.

Sounds confusing to the average person. Let’s just say physicists believe FRIB will altar research and science.

“It’ll make the United States very competitive in many fields in basic research but also in stewardship, national security, and other aspects,” says Langanke.

Turning the U.S., namely East Lansing, into a center for global research is just one goal for FRIB Chief Scientist Bradley Sherrill.

“We anticipate every year at least 1000 users into the facility,” Sherrill says.

Sherrill says Frib’s half a billion dollar pricetag will pay for itself.

“It will bring nearly $1 billion to Mid-Michigan in the process. It will have a big economic impact in the area, but it will also have a big impact on science,” says Sherrill.

One business already seeing the fruits of FRIB…

“We were 100% occupied last night, and we expect to be tonight as well,” says East Lansing Marriott Hotel General Manager Eric Sodul.

Consultants say FRIB will create thousands of jobs. But the real draw…

“Once the world learns about us, we can benefit from their science, their research, their brains. And we’re attracting the kinds of people we really need here in Mid-Michigan,” says Waymire.

“A dream come true when FRIB is operational,” Langanke says.

For these scientists, that day can’t come soon enough.

Saturday’s workshop was a kickoff event for the entire weekend. The scientists will be in town until Monday.

The OP was looking for a comparison between EMU/CMU and we get a Sparty advertisement. No additional comments are needed.

Do you mean Michigan State University or Eastern Michigan University? That is what’s causing a problem here!

Our high school has sent 3 students to EMU and 2 have since transfered. Even though my husband got his masters degree from EMU, he would not recommend it to any undergrads. The area is terrible.

Do a search under “EMU” and you will find a lot of information. There is one EMU student who says EMU is fine if you live in Ann Arbor and hang out with the UofM students.

“Do a search under “EMU” and you will find a lot of information. There is one EMU student who says EMU is fine if you live in Ann Arbor and hang out with the UofM students.”

Exactly what I said. The OP, who obviously is not from Michigan originally, was referring to Eastern Michigan University and Central Michigan University. The “State” part does not apply to either of these two schools, except that they are both public.

toledo, rjkofnovi, and all who replied-Thanks for your honest info. It was exactly what I was looking for. I was asking about EMU and CMU (sorry I added the State part). You have answered my question and we will instead focus on visiting some other schools and not spend a day trying to see these 2 schools. We are from NH, so don’t know Michigan at all!

Reading recent post, if your considering MSU definately the best pick of the other two. MSU is known to have one of the best education programs.

^^ rjk, please read carefully!!

“We are also looking at Michigan State.” -OP

That’s the only reason why I would brought up MSU (State) in comparison to EMU or CMU for that mater as my initial reply did not contain State!!! However, as an alumnus, I do admit that my strong affinity towards MSU could have been a bit excessive (as do some UM fans toward their alma mater here) when I copied/pasted the ‘unrelated’ F-RIB news since OP’s daughter is into Education rather (even though everyone whose related to MSU knows that winning the DOE’s half-billion dollars FRIB project is not just for the Nuclear Physics program, and it is currently transforming the outlook of the E. Lansing Campus in many many ways, certainly one of the most exciting and important break through in MSU’s school history).

Go State! :)

p.s. The only thing that I know of CMU really is that Soaring Eagle Casino located in Mt. Pleasant if you ask me, and that could be a positive or negative impact pending on the person… However, I am certain that academically, CMU should have lots to offer to the students as do EMU and MSU!

“We are also looking at Michigan State.” -OP

My mistake. I did miss that remark.

I have a cousin who’s been on the education faculty at U of Mich, EMU, and Michigan State.

He says the college of education at U of Mich (Ann Arbor) is much more concerned with educational research than with training school teachers, so don’t lose any sleep about not going there.

EMU supposedly graduates as many school teachers as any university in the country. The campus is nice enough, but the city it’s in and the on-campus life are not very vibrant. So…decent enough for locals to get an education on the cheap, but if you’re coming from out of state, you could do better.

MSU is apparently VERY good in both educational research and training teachers. My cousin raves about the college of education. Beautiful campus, bigtime sports, etc. Classic large midwestern university.

Central Michigan is sort of a “poor man’s” MSU…decent campus, decent sports, decent academics, decent social life. Sort of a generic medium-sized state university…nothing really fabulous, and nothing really bad about it, either.

USNWR ranks Michgian State’s education (grad) programs -

1 in Elementary teacher education

1 in Secondary teacher education

2 in Curriculum and instruction

^^rjk, will you be joining me cheering for your neighbor (of novi) tonight? :p
