Centre College Special Scholarships

First I apologize for posting here, but the Centre College forum is awfully silent.
I was just wondering if anyone knows about the Bonner Scholars and New Horizon Scholars application/selection process at Centre? S3 submitted his scholarship applications last night, and I was just wondering how the successful applicants are chosen.

bumping back to the top

Hi Mom,

I can’t answer your question. Bumping and hoping you get an answer. We had our eye on Centre College, nice school, but in all honesty I was a little put off about the financial troubles the school was/maybe still is/ going through. I found some articles on the Internet that basically out lined the problems and I decided that it would certainly lead to higher tuition and fees for whomever decided to go there and dropped them.

Compare that to a school like Rollins in WP FL, a school that has a huge endowment, and absolutely no money problems, meaning you get great FA and the place is spotless and happy and it just makes you think.

But otherwise Centre had/has a lot going for them especially if you from that area and are used to cold weather. I hope S3 gets it. Best wishes.

ACecil:
Thanks for the info. S3 already has been accepted, but looking at the special scholarships now. I guess I should do some more research. I didn’t think Danville, Kentucky would be that cold either? We considered Rollins, but kept hearing about the Country Club atmosphere and heard that the FA at Centre is fairly good.
Thanks anyway for the heads up on Centre.

My daughter is seriously considering Centre, as well as some other really fine liberal arts colleges. I think our college search has been thorough, yet I haven’t heard a thing about financial troubles at Centre. ACCecil, could you provide a link to any articles on the subject?
I think Centre’s the kind of school that can take a kid anywhere they want to go in life. It’s not as well known as the other schools my daughter is applying to, but that doesn’t scare us off. Centre’s also very generous with their merit aid. It’s my understanding that Centre will send info on merit aid to prospective students before the end of the month.
mom0809, Danville is a little over an hour southeast of Louisville. Bitter cold weather there is rare, but it can happen. The winters are typically mild. Today [mid-January], it’s blustery and in the fifties. The spring and fall seasons in Kentucky [and around Danville] are lovely.

Rollins Enrollment: 2715
Rollins Endowment: $279,000,000
$102,762 per student.

Centre Enrollment: 1310
Centre Endowment: $175,000,000
$133,587 per student.

Centre’s endowment is quite strong. As you see from the data, one could easily make the case that it is stronger than Rollins.

Blindluck: Will your daughter be applying to the Brown Fellows? S3 not quite up to that standard, I think.

Haystack: Thanks for the statistics.

Centre College is my #1 pick for S3. It will come down to merit and financial aid in the end. I would love to know more about the selection process for the New Horizons and Bonner Scholarships. If anyone has any firsthand knowledge of these, it would be great.

mom0809, yes, she’s applied for the Brown Fellow program. I think that ACCecil is mistaken about financial difficulties at Centre. On the contrary, I think Centre’s financial position is quite strong. I’d be interested to hear back from ACCecil. Best of luck to your son on the New Horizons and Bonner scholarships.

Blindluck: Thanks and same to your D as well. A parent of a successful Brown Fellow has posted on the Centre College thread, and I think her daughter has been having a great experience at Centre.
I too feel, from all the reading I’ve been doing, that Centre College seems to be on quite sound financial ground.
Maybe our paths will cross one day…either knowingly or unknowingly :-)

I found the article on my computer. If you want it. please private message me with your email and I’ll email attach it to you.

It is dated Febr 2009.

As I reread it, perhaps saying it outlines “problems” isn’t accurate still it gave me pause. It begins like this:

February 25, 2009

Dear Centre Parents,
Several days ago you received a letter from John Cuny, the College’s vice president for finance, announcing the comprehensive fee that our Board of Trustees has set for 2009-10. In that letter, John noted that we are being especially careful to examine expenditures and reduce them where possible.
In this message I’d like to expand on that and give you an overview of our sources of revenue and areas of expenditure; some detail on things we’re doing to hold down costs; some information on financial areas we can’t control; some information on financial aid and our commitment to remaining a place of access and opportunity; and, lastly, a snapshot of where all that leaves us at this point in time.

The bottom line is I don’t think it should dissuade you if Centre made your final cut. I live in WP minutes from Rollins and even though Rollins is still dogged by the “country club” culture rap, the truth is, from what I can tell, Rollins has transformed itself into an almost too good to be true University if you want small and private. Perfect location, weather, etc. and very serious academics if you want them. Sure, you can party like it is 1999 but most Rollins student view college as an investment.

Rollins has also made itself very cool for the experienced “executive” types who go back to school. Just food for thought.

The post about Centre financial issues is speculative at best.

The letter you could have posted would have said they were being prudent in a down economy. Comparing debt ratios Centre looks very good

Centre is a good school with excellent instructors, as are many highly ranked schools
Rollins isn’t on anyones best value list but when you compare locations it is an apples and oranges comparison.

Danville has 4 seasons Orlando? I wonder !

ACCecil,

That letter on its own is no evidence of “financial troubles.” What that letter says to me is that the school was looking closely at their finances at a time when every nonprofit in the country was wondering about the health of their endowments.

This is how rumors get started!!!

Agreed hate the rumors that can get started with a comment like above
Centre has worked to be in very good financial condition

Hi Mom0809

Did your S3 got the Bonner Scholars or New Horizon Scholars? My son is looking at the same scholarships.

Thanks
