(I'm double posting this because I neve get any answers in the search and selection section!!)

I recently read through the visit reports for Centre College. One of the reports said that 60% of the kids were Greek and that the school is very cliquey (not sure that is spelled correctly). Anyone know if this is true???

Hmm. My sister’s boyfriend goes there, and is neither Greek nor cliquey (he’s an artsy, vaguely hippie-ish guy majoring in music and religion). He seems to like it a lot there and to have plenty of friends.

However, I can think of something about the school that would contribute to cliques. Because it gives nice merit money to in-state kids, it attracts a large number of in-state National Merit Semi-Finalists, who tend to be concentrated at specific high schools. This means that a significant number of the students come in already knowing a significant number of the other students. I could see that leading to cliques.

Princeton Review reports 40% of females in sororities and 34% of males in fraternities. Centre is a CTCL school–that says something right there.

The CTCL and National Merit pieces are why Centre was on my DD’s list. She sat in on a class when we visited and said it was the best lecture she ever attended; unfortunately, it’s a little out of the way for her and she said she’d feel isolated. So while she really liked the school, she didn’t like the location.

I didn’t get an overwhelming Greek feeling on campus; I didn’t see a lot of kids in Frat/Sororities tees. It’s the smallest school DD looked at, and as JessieHL says, it does pull a lot of the high achievers from KY, but I haven’t heard it’s cliquey. On our tour, one of the admitted students was coming from Long Island and another from Rochester NY so there are definitely students there from out of state.

Neighbors (in NC) took their DD on a visit to Centre. They were very impressed with the campus and everyone they spoke to. I recall them mentioning seeing the school’s chancellor having lunch in the student dining hall, talking w/ students.

The D is a good student (1470/1600) who is definitely is not the Greek type.
They thought Centre would be a good fit but she later decided to stay closer to home.
She was rejected at Davidson and will be attending Elon Univ. this year.
