Certificate of Finances??

I don't get this form at all.... What are we supposed to fill up? It's asking us to state we can cover so and so expenses on our own... when meeting that expense is the biggest trouble... I mean do we simply write that we are depending on your scholarships? If we don't give that form our application is incomplete!

help guys!!

Where is this form? Which college?
Only for those asking for aid or for everyone ?

I am applying to SUNY- Stony Brook and they ask for it…

Help,anyone???

Hey man, I’m facing the same problem with American University. I just created a thread too!

UPDATE: I just read in a CC thread that we’re required to mention the amount our families can honestly contribute, even if it doesn’t meet the full cost of yearly attendance.

Apparently, you fill another CoF form after admission to the college. And that’s the one that matters more. Because you’ll also have your aid offer by then, and things will be a lot more lucid then.

For now, just fill in the amount you can honestly bear.

hey, i’m an indian student too, studying at an international school in Belgium… i applied to stony brook as well, and have just about enough to show that i can support myself, even though i really can’t pay 29k a year to study there. but call them up and ask them what you should do. i know stony brook gives a lot of attractive scholarships, which is precisely the reason i applied there. so just call them up saying certification of finances should not be a barrier to receiving scholarships.

just a word of caution: stony brook is NOT a good place to live in and chances are that you won’t like the place… but you can apply, and i guess the job prospects will be good after you graduate. however, chances are that you will not enjoy the 4 years that you spend there for your undergraduate course.

@ tintin1992( btw, are you a tintin fan?? Very lame but that’s what came to my mind first!)

How can you say Stony Brook won’t be a good experience? If I may ask, have you been there? Or do you know someone?? Anyway, Stony Brook is my safety… but then yes, those merit scholarships really attract me… I know the dorm experiences are bad…but, one cant have everything!.. If it’s that bad, why did you apply? Just wanted to know…

hey! i just noticed you’re from kolkata! i’m from kolkata too! high-five! :D

haha, well i like tintin comics, but my pet name is tintin, hence the username :P

Stony Brook might look cheaper than other US choices, but if you attend, you will have to settle for CRAZY prices on campus. They overprice food beyond limits, so much so that things are cheaper in NYC than at stony brook itself. also you will most likely have to live with 2 other people, which does not work out very well often. but that’s entirely up to you. one more thing is that during weekends, it will be a ghost town, because everyone leaves for the weekend, so unless you have a few people you know in NYC, you have to spend your weekends getting bored. there have been stories where stony brook has simply tried to extort money from students just for the sake of doing so, making them attend extra classes for certain subjects even though they have fulfilled their requirement.

I applied there because I applied way back in October before I knew about any of this. But since I applied, I figured it would be good to get an acceptance from there.

If you’re looking at low costs + respected institutions other than the Ivies, I would recommend the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. I applied there and got my acceptance recently. It’s ranked 3rd for chemical engineering in the US, which is what I want to major in and it’s 24k per year. plus there are HUGE work opportunities, as more than 75% of the students there work and study at the same time. also, you might get a 2.5k scholarship if your stats are high enough. overall, it’s ranked higher than stony brook, and as far as chemical engineering goes, i think it’s ranked higher than some of the top Ivy league schools in US. if you ask me, it’s a great place to apply.

Why is your pet name Tintin? Do you look like him or have a dog called Snowy?

That looks like peanuts compared to 24K a year. Did you get any scholarship btw?

haha i must have been through this story a thousand times, but yes, when i was young, i had a tuft of hair sticking out from my head, so i was named tintin (pet name, though).

“That looks like peanuts compared to 24K a year. Did you get any scholarship btw?”
well, considering you will have lots of job opportunities that can pay 7/8k per year, your total cost comes down. don’t expect to pay less than that at stony brook, trust me.

oh and i forgot to tell you: minnesota offers a 10k scholarship to exceptional students, irrespective of whether they are international students.

10 k + a probable 7-8 k more… ummm… Dosent look too bad… But i wish I’d known this earlier!! I sort of promised myself I’m done with applications and will go straight back to my books( which obviously didn’t happen!)!

@Tintin… HI!! That’s another fellow calcuttan I’ve discovered! Such a pleasure!..:D

haha yea, my dad wants me to apply to a few places more, but i said i’m done with apps and now i’m waiting for results! are you applying to places like singapore as well?

Not at all, if it’s not US I’d like to stay here. I mean it’s true I’m looking westwards, but my country too has a lot to offer!! … Singapore and all, I don’t think those institutes have much of a prestige in India… So I’m not sure about them… I’m pretty naive to the whole process, tbh! So you’re applying to a whole lot of places?? To be on the safe side??

yes, i’m applying to about 17 colleges in total i think. US, UK, singapore, hong kong and australia. i’m as internationally minded as they come lol.

I think NUS (singapore) has a lot to offer for indian students, considering the large number of indians who go there every year. but it’s up to you, cuz at the end of the day, you should go where you think you will be happiest.

I was considering going back to india until recently, when i decided that for an indian student to have completed 10th in india, travelled abroad and then back to india after 12th would have been too much. but hey, i’m not complaining! :)

17 ? :open_mouth: … i thought i had enough on my plate with 10…

and regarding this certification of finances thing… can it any way be submitted online or do you have to fax or mail it?

i faxed the documents along with the supporting documents… i don’t know if that’s sufficient though; they might ask me to send them the original copies of the documents by mail as well. but yea, i think you can fax them to the admissions office.

^Again, some colleges accept fax and some don’t…It’s better to mail it I guess, for once and for all!

@tintin…some tenacity you have there! 17!!! I’d probably prefer stifling myself to death than apply to any more!( The entire process was so damn tedious!..Grrr…:frowning: )

yea i guess it’s better to mail them…

and i applied to 17 colleges because i felt that i needed to. in the UK i applied to 5 colleges and have received offers and stuff but i am not planning to go there. so it’s effectively 11/12. yes, it was an incredibly tedious process, and at one point of time, i was having to focus more on application essays than preparing for the SAT or doing normal school-work! i’m just glad it’s all over, but i still need to apply to U of Melbourne. thankfully they don’t need an essay i think. i’ll probably go there if i receive rejections from all my colleges, and it’s a good thing, because the course there starts in January, so it’s like a major back-up. and it’s a good university too, ranked 32nd in the world for engineering.
