Hey, guys! I am a freshman international applicant who got accepted into University of Kansas and Michigan State University. However, I am still awaiting response from Purdue University, Drexel University, Stanford University , and MIT. I am a certified 1st Dan (Senior Degree) black belt in Taekwondo and I work as an assistant instructor. I have won numerous gold medals in regional (open district, inter-club, inter-school) and state championships. (Probably, recognized as one of the best Taekwondo players in state.) I have also qualified as a national player by winning a gold medal in a state level National selection tournament.

Other info: SAT superscored: 1950/2400 (590-Critical Reading, 740-Math, 620-Writing)
SAT Subject Tests: Math-770, Physics-680
TOEFL iBT: 110/120
GPA: 4.00/4.00 (unweighted)
I wish to major in Mechanical Engineering.

I have already sent e-mails to these universities citing my accomplishments in Taekwondo. Yet, I am confused; I wonder if it'll make a difference at all as I have attached a certificate of my black belt (+ a photo of my side kick) with the message. I have also sent these universities a recommendation letter from my Taekwondo coach. Nevertheless, I believe that the universities weigh all these achievements and so I wonder if I should send them a mail of all my copies of certificates. I need help. Any advice would be much appreciated.

The vast majority of schools really discourage sending in stuff like this.

For example, Stanford says: “DO NOT send additional materials such as resumes, research papers, newspaper articles and writing samples. They will not be considered.”

I would assume that a photocopy of a certificate would be equally disregarded.

harborceal, Thank you for your response. But then, how would I put forth all these achievements? Do you really think that the email I already sent them would do fine? I just thought that proof of these achievements make up an important factor in admission decision.
My friend’s counselor asked him to mail all his certificates to the universities. I am new to this whole process and so I thought that I’d do the same. Anyway, I appreciate your reply.

The email should be fine, and hopefully you outlined them in the Common App/your essays.

Your friend’s counselor is in the wrong here… an old saying in admissions goes “the thicker the file (folder), the thicker (dumber…) the applicant”

Most schools SPECIFICALLY state that they don’t want extra certificates and stuff. Don’t go against that!

I’m reassured now. Thanks a lot, mate! And yes, I outlined my passion and achievements in my essays.

Hey Rising Dragon! I’m a fellow black belt (in karate) as well! It might be a good idea to send in some pictures of you sparring at state level competitions. What might be even better are pictures of you performing extremely advanced techniques like flying side kicks, twin jump kicks or flying axe kicks (provided you can do those kicks)! I’ve tried showcasing my technique with flying kicks previously in situations which involved a selection process, and it has definitely given me an edge!
