I'm shooting for the college of fine arts (specifically architecture) as regular decision (my parents won't let me enter the "binding contract" for ED).

2130 SAT: (retaking in December)
690M/690V/750W

AP's: 4's on Stat, Art history, Portfolio, 5 on US History
Will take Gov, BC Calc, Economics, Portfolio, Physics C, Compsci I, English IV Lit, English IV lang AP's this year

Rank: top 10% at public (top 6.4%)

Mediocre Ec's: VP of NAHS, in NHS, Mu Alpha Theta, Nat'l Merit commended Scholar, Scholastic Gold Key winner, etc.

I think I have a very strong Portfolio (and will find out their opinion Oct. 15 at Portfolio Review)

Think I can get in? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think the chances of admission to CFA are based almost entirely on the strength of your audition or portfolio. As I understand it, the CFA will send a "wish list" of students to admissions, and if there are no barriers to admission, you're in! Good luck!

My son applied to, and was accepted by, the CFA last year (although he decided to go elsewhere). At that time, we were told by a CMU rep that admission to most majors in CFA is based 50% on academics (SAT score, high school GPA and rank, etc.) and 50% on the portfolio or audition -- with the exception of Architecture. Admissions for Architecture is based entirely on academics; this is the only major within CFA for which SAT II subject tests are required. No portfolio is required, nor is it part of the decision process, for Architecture.

Unless the procedures have chnaged dramatically since last year, your portfolio will count only if you are applying for an art or design major, not Architecture.

DD got the same info as worried_mom during her admissions quest at CMU last year.....50/50 academic/portfolio for fine arts & design, but much heavier weight on academics for architechture. OTOH, the performing arts puts way more emphasis on your audition, than the academics.

Matta2888, if your portfolio is good, you are in. Please read my "Overview of Out Visit toCarngeie Mellon," which is the sticky post found at the top of the CMU forum. I list the median old SAT scores for each college. You are certainly above the median.

Wrong. There is NO portfolio review for the School of Architecture, period. Admission to the School of Architecture is totally decided by Undergraduate Admissions.

This is correct. I just got back from a sleeping bag weekend, accourding to an asscosciate dean of the CFA and an admissions rep for the CFA, no portfolio for architecture.
