NASS 2 was awesome. I had to push myself so hard, I had never run more than a mile beforehand.

Here were my CFA results:
6:37 mile
57 pushups
64 foot basketball throw
9.3 second shuttle run (Grass was wet all of our times sucked!)
65 situps
19 pullups

Is there any reason for me to retake it?

Also, how do my chances look now?

I don't play a sport at school. (I could do track next year if it would help significantly)

Also, is the Coast Guard Academy's physics program comparable to the Naval Academy's? Anyone know what kind of military assignments you get after the CGA?

Thanks for the help.

One more thing, they told us at NASS we can complete most of our applications right now at home, but I can't figure out where the application is.

Hey I was at NASS 2 as well.

If you go to the United States Naval Academy - Home Page site and go to admissions page you will see the link to the application page.

I am trying to get started on it right now.

All I can find is the preliminary application. Is it directly linked form USNA Admissions Home ?

What company were you in? Alpha here.

Random Question:

Who won color company for NASS 2 this year?

You have to open a preliminary app first; then they send you the info allowing you to log in and complete the rest of the app.

Your CFA looks OK. Mile is a bit slow for males (I assume you're male) but it's also at the end of a number of other events, so I think you'll be fine. I don't really see a reason to retake it unless your run time improves significantly (sub 6:00) and your other events stay the same or improve.

As for your packet, it's impossible to make any type of realistic assessment based solely on statistics on a forum. That said, there are two areas where it APPEARS you might improve. First, you don't seem to have any organized sports. Given your CFA results, you seem to be in good shape. But USNA likes to see team sports, preferably school sports and varsity, but community leagues or individual events (i.e., judo) can also be paths to success.

Second, I don't see a lot of leadership positions. I'm not sure what the representative positions you list are about, so hard to judge. But you should look for opportunities this year in which you can demonstrate leadership. That does not necessarily mean being a class officer. For example, you might lead a particular project or event in or out of school. You could start a club, group or event that involves a number of people, raises funds, etc.

Being a successful applicant is more than doing well academically. You need the athletic and leadership components as well.

One suggestion: contact your BGO early and discuss with him/her things you might do. That person is in a much better position than we are on this board to discuss your entire situation with you and provide informed guidance on additional things you might do to improve your chances of an appointment.

I was kind of lazy during my freshman year, the leadership positions I have now are all new. Math honor society pres basically entails me running the whole show so that should help somewhat.

Thanks mom3boys I'm gonna go try to find the letter I got with the login info.

Charlie won color company, I'm guessing it's because they had no AC the entire week.

I wouldn't worry about your CFA too much. I did just about the same in everything, although I was a second faster in the shuttle run (we did it inside at NASS last year) and a minute slower on the mile, which i bombed.

Alright. What is the proper way to address my BGO via email? I need to add some things to the application that there aren't blocks for.

Powerhawk: one thing that made the process for my DS a bit more organized was a 3-ring binder...I suggest you get one now. Every piece of paper that came from the academy was 3 hole punched and then went into the binder...so there was never a need to search the house for a particular mailing. Also, now everything is all together for the scrapbook I will make. As you get further in the process, there will be more and more mail (form senators, congressmen, the academy....). Try to get organized now.

Not a bad idea, I'll probably throw them all in a folder or a pile where they will stay together.

Anyone have any opinions on Navy v. Coast Guard? I'm mostly concerned with the academic differences between the two... I should figure out about the rest at the summer program there.

I don't know, I think that Powerhawk is a very 'powerful' candidate. USNA doesn't turn down many 1500's let alone a 1540. Your CFA is not too bad except that the mile time could come down a little bit, but realistically your academics are definitely your strong point and will more than likely propel you over the top as long as you complete everything on time.

I'd really try to get some sort of letter in there from track or something that could help you get in shape.

Realistically, if you get everything in on time, you're almost a lock if you can sell the board with a plan for your physical development.

Um, yeah.

You killed me, academic wise.

And I got an LOA.

But remember, they are looking for leaders.

I got an appointment and my CFA wasn't outstanding last year, but I was invovled in a lot of sports. I would really recommend getting invovled in a sport. It's more so the teamwork you build playing a sport that's important than the physical aspect -- I'm sure there are people who don't play a sport and are in better shape than those who play a sport, but that experience of working with others and winning and losing is not there.

You might also want some community service. I did a ton of volunteer work. I didn't do just random things that would fatten up my resume. I picked a few things that I really loved to do and did my volunteer work with that (volunteered at the hospital over the summer, ran a spanish club for kids at an elememtary school, and volunteered for a lot of politicians and campaigns)

Good luck! I would suggest doing some volunteer work this summer and maybe play a club sport if it's too late to start one at school.

That's cool, I have some good ideas for where I could volunteer. I already do some tutoring at my school.

I could do track next year, but I'm going to be taking mostly college classes so it could be a problem fitting in my schedule, going back and fourth between college and my high school, especially when combined with all the other extracurriculars I have. I doubt this will sell them, but the reason I really didn't do sports was because I really enjoy lifting, and I would have had to quit before I had a car.

I've seen it happen. More than once. That said, someone who has very strong academics is in good position provided: (1) there is evidence the candidate can handle the physical rigor of USNA and (2) there is evidence the person has been -- or has the potential to be -- a leader.

I think I have the potential to be a leader, I just hope I can demonstrate that. The exact things I have worked for to demonstrate leadership are:

SGA Cochair
Regional SGA Representative
Math Honor Society President
National Honor Society Member

Thanks for all the help so far.

i wouldn't retake. all of the mids I talked to said that the CFA is used to make sure you have room for improvement and so you have a chance at surviving Plebe Summer. and 19 pullups (even though you went over the 18 max) is pretty spectacular. Your Results are great!

Preface: This is a decision that I might have to make later, but it's really bugging me. This is all hypothetical, as I have not even applied to theses colleges yet.

US News shows a peer review score of 3.9 for USNA and a 3.7 for UMCP. Several people at my school have received full ride scholarships to UMCP with less credentials than I have, so I have a good chance of getting the same scholarship.

While I do want to serve and I do feel I fit into the academy lifestyle, it would be illogical for me to devote 5 years of my life when I could be in grad school to the military if there is no significant benefit. To me, it seems that the Academy has so much of a better program simply because classes are so much smaller than those at UMCP, and are all taught by actual devoted professors, not TAs.

So, what it really boils down to is how accurate is the US News report? Are they actually taking into account the class size and how open the professors make themselves?

I just want to be 100% sure that the Academy is superior to UMCP befor plebe summer, if I'm lucky enough to receive a LOA.
