CFA: To those who dread the Pull Up

Hey everyone applying for '12, I took my CFA today and I did pretty well. I see a lot of people saying they have trouble with pull ups. I'll agree they are hard. But what worked for me was one of those ones you can put in your room. I installed one right in my doorway, I picked it up at Sports Authority. It really works, just do like 5 going in/5 going out, before you go to sleep, whenever. The pull up is all about practice, so it's just a little something that helped me. Good luck everyone.

well how many did you do? the average is 9 and the best is 18

16, almost made max.

He's dead right though. When I heard about the CFA being administered at SLS, I started practicing. I barely could do one the first time I did it because I never practiced, and then at the end.. I got up to about an average of 12.. and that was practicing weekly.. imagine.. doing it daily.

I started at 0. then with remedial training, i got to 1.
then next thing i knew, i hit 4, and after a while i got to 5-6 range. I feel bad that i cant do more, West Point inspires an image of greatness, and I feel small when i admit that i cannot do more than 6 pull-ups. I am training though, so I hope to hit 20 before r-day

I got 11 after 3 months of work out. I had an injury but did not affected much.

Started at 7 and after about a month and a half of every other day workouts I am up to 15....

Best possible way to improve pull-ups is to go to failure, literally. Do as many pull-ups as you can until you fail and then wait three minutes and do it again, until you fail...wait three minutes adn do it one more time...every other day. I gurantee you will improve vastly...going to failure is what really builds muscle...

I agree with "jpr_fire2gold " . For those who can't do many, try negatives.

for the basketball throw can you only use your hand or can you curl it into your forearm ? i am a soccer goalkeeper and was just wondering if i was allowed to throw like that as long as i use one hand and have both knees on the ground ?

Tricky part is keeping both knees parallel, or else you could get a lot of momentum to chuck it. The thing that I have trouble with is finding the time to release the ball. It seems like either I dont get full momentum in the ball if I throw it at 45 degrees and if I do get alot of momentum, I end up having to throw it at about a 20 degree angle.

I took my practice CFA at USMA for the SLS and I only got 6. I went home and practiced every other day by supplementing my normal work out, getting to 30 in sets of 5 (and eventually sets of 10). I took the CFA a month later and I got 18, and I could've kept going.

If anyone needs help, i'll tell you exactly how I worked it, cause I HATED them too until I got good at them

Yes please, do tell us how you've worked up your pull-ups. I've hit a wall at 6.
