Muh Dad went jobless for 4 years, right at the same time my sister began to attend college. Mom and dad effectively divorced during Jr year (dad moved to LA), and then mom fell into deep depression, not to mention that we began to constantly squabble. 'course, though, the story of my grades in Jr year is not all the fault of my family life - how lame is that? But eh.. It's worth mentioning, and I'm just glad it's over.

My best recs will be from my two mentors (researchers) @ the monkey farm -- I love working there and I think/[hope] it shows. I'll also be getting another rec from my AP Physics teacher, who's also advising our Inventeam. My counseler rec will be horrible, I KNOW it. I'm not just speculating, I know he has an unsavory opinion of me. But, I've no idea who to ask for my second teacher rec. Perhaps my Lit and Comp 12 teacher? (I transferred out of AP Lit - ugh, and it's such a shame too; the difference between LC12 and AP Lit, even in-person, is like night and day. The AP Lit teacher is probably the most intelligent in the school, and.. is very eloquent with words.
AHH, fudsticks!)

I will be competing in Intel STS with my work at the Primate Center, likely involving brain-volume segmentation in a scopolamine study.. and I plan to take AP CS AB. But would anyone even know I'm self studying CSAB, or if I passed the AMC 12/AIME this year?

I'm looking at majoring in CS, perhaps with a splash of ME or neuro? I like to say biotech, or some other interdisciplinary field, but I don't know just yet.

Finally, my list of prospective schools, prioritized:
I. UW, Carnegie Mellon, Cornell
II. WUSL, Johns Hopkins
III. UIUC, the UC schools, UMich-AA
IV. MIT (just for kicks.. you never know if you don't try, right? :/), Stanford, Duke, UPenn

I will submit a token app to OSU as a guaranteed safety, but... I would not want to spend another 4 years with 3/4 of my high school again. Icky.

I hadn't even really considered any non-MIT schools much, until recently. But the extremely stiff competition here - our valedictorian & salutatorian are perfect in every respect - and my disappointing grades in Jr year have recently made me look elsewhere. And I /can/ definitely be happy at a diff college, but again, all those assuming years have deprived me of any knowledge about other schools.

Any college suggestions, or ideas of my chances? Thanks! :)

UW - match
Carnegie Mellon - match
Cornell - match
WashU - reach (but almost within grasp)
Johns Hopkins - slight reach/match
MIT - reach
Stanford - reach
Duke - reach
UPenn - reach

You have a good AP background (though your grades are a little on the low side for an applicant) and decent test scores, though I'd say that your ECs are excellent. Try pushing your SAT to at least a 2200 and show your ECs well, and you have a shot at all your schools.

karch:

UCB/UCLA: Slight Reach (out of state, Engineering)

Way too many Bs for your category 4 schools. It would be highly unlikely to get into MIT with a B in any math class and a 720 math2.

Thanks guys.

And Bobby - yeah, that's pretty much what I figured.

But I do plan on 800'ing the math, and at least 770-ing the Bio & Physics this November. The first time I'd taken the math, I made the mistake of procrastinating to the point that I took all three of my SAT IIs on the same test date, completely cold turkey. Stupid, stupid, I know.

I can so 800 all three though, and I have the time to prepare. My schedule this year affords me triple early release every other day. XD

One last Q though - how difficult is it to get into WUSTL?
