Challenge for Honors students in CS

Hi,

My S and I recently visited Drexel and really liked it. He is interested in the CS with concentration in Game Design. I'm a big proponent of co-op education, so I think that aspect of Drexel is great.

He's a very academically strong student (top 2% of his class, 35 ACT, NMSF, challenging coursework etc.) and I'm wondering if he will be challenged enough at Drexel.

This is partially brought on by reading in this thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1021496-cant-get-loan-last-year-college-ideas.html that the person finds the CS coursework unchallenging. Of course I know this is the writing of one disgruntled student and I don't want to give it undue weight.

But since my S's stats are well above Drexel's middle 50% I'd be interested in the perspective of other students with stats like his -- are they challenged enough? Are there honors sections of many CS classes, or if not are the honors options enough to redeem them, or do you spend a lot of time waiting for "everyone else to get it"?

He was attracted to Drexel by their game design program, their co-op program, and their substantial merit aid offered to NM finalists, which he hopes/expects to become.

Thanks in advance for any feedback

Hi, I’m a Music Industry student here. I had a 3.89 GPA and graduated high school with my 2 year Associate of Art’s college degree. I find that the courses are challenging enough for me. However, I am not taking math or english or any of those classes (as I already have those credits) so I am really only taking music related classes. For this reason, the classes are challenging enough for me because I haven’t taken them before. I think that Drexel is very good about giving credit where credit is due, therefore although I am 18 and in my first “real” year of college, I am considered a sophomore and was awarded 53 credits for the work I did before I got here. If your son has taken AP courses and stuff like that he will most likely be able to skip the very basic english/math classes (I can’t give any information on CS classes though, sorry!) and go into more advanced ones. Also the summer before entering school, you can take classes that help place you into the appropriate class for you.

Hopefully this helps.

Drexel is very unique in the fact that it has 10 week terms, which cause the students to always need to be on the top of their game. If he slacked off it would effect him very quickly. Everything has the honors option at Drexel. He would notify the professor and have to do a bit of extra work for each class that other students do and it will be considered an honors level class. I know many of my friends graduated in the top 5 students of their graduating class and still find it to be a good match. Also, with him having such a good academic background the coop program will give him the competitive edge because it will add the real world experience that books can’t teach at other universities.
