Hey guys, I'd really appreciate it if u could chance a family member who will be applying this fall for the class of 2018. just to get a rough idea. Note that these stats are rough estimates.

Stats:
GPA: 3.4 UW/ 3.95W
Rank: 110/350 UW, 90/350
SAT (CR+M): 1280, 670M 590 CR (will retake hoping for at least 1350)
AP classes: 5
Intended major: Materials Science
EC's: NHS, Robotics, Bechtel engineering program, Academic Team, piano (several awards), 200 hrs + of community service, CAD/Construction program at local cc.
hook's: family member currently attends

Thanks!!!

Verbatim that doesn’t look like a fall acceptance in my opinion. Raising the SAT score will definitely help.

Is this family member IS or OOS? (Since you said family member and not sibling, am assuming possibility of OOS)

Biggest weakness to me is rank, but doesn’t knock him/her out of the ballpark for fall admit if IS because GPA is still good. OOS is a different story because it is more competitive in certain regions. Since still in junior year, there is definitely an opportunity to demonstrate an upward trend, so if that improves, that would be very helpful.

SAT’s are low end, but def still in range. I agree with TerpGuy that raising SAT would help. Maybe try ACT? That’s geared more for the math/science minds, so it can’t hurt to give it a shot.

FYI, unfortunately, I don’t think family member attending is a hook. If sibling, maybe will help, but I doubt it. If that does help, I would be very happy to hear that…

I remember asking the Maryland rep at a college fair if being a legacy was helpful, and I was told in no uncertain terms that legacy holds no weight -none! - in admissions considerations. The only thing legacy helps with is eligibility for alumni scholarships for legacy students.

Make sure the family member makes an official visit and checks in to record visit at an open house for prospective students. They like to see demonstrated interest.

BTW, I am really glad to see your recent posts - it seems like you are happy at Maryland. :)
