being that u r oos that already makes it diffuicult…and your low test scores/rank will not help u at all…also if u look at the average stats for LAS students u r under them too…and applying late is harder to get into than applying for priority admission…overall im sorry to say but i do not think u will get into u of i…do u have any backups?

well, it’s alright, i knew i wouldnt get into it, i asked for a chance was just because u of i has actuarial science major. my back-ups are penn state and ohio state. hope i could get into them. thank you for your chance anyway

but i havent applied yet. if i apply before mid december, will it affect my chance of getting in? and i just read about U of I’s stat, they only have less than 5% OOS students.

Apply but consider it a reach (but still a chance). Combined rank/test score place you in lower 25% of those usually admitted to arts & sciences college and actuarial science (math department) usually requires a little better than the A&S usual range. Being OOS makes no difference as they evaluate OOS on same basis as in-state. About 8% of those freshman who enrolled in 2008 are OOS (not counting internationals which adds another 8%); however, only about 8% of the total number of applicants were OOS, meaning they were admitted at essentially the same rate as in-state.

If you apply anytime between now and Jan 2, you will be informed mid-Feb of the decision and it makes no difference to probability of admission when during the next few weeks you apply. Essays are very important for borderline candidates.

i’m pretty sure i heard somewhere that essays are a big deal at uiuc. it’s one of the only state universities that require 2 essays, regardless of which college you are applying to. so yes, i would say that essays are a big deal. plus, they don’t want letters of recommendation… so other than the essays, your stats are all that uiuc uses as part of the admissions process. with your stats, i think essays will make or break you. if you have well-written essays, i think you definitely have a shot.

when an admissions person came to my school, they said that their main 3 things to look at are GPA, class rank, and test scores. If those are good, you’re in. Apparently, they only look at your essays and ECs if you are borderline, or for scholarship reasons. So since you have borderline scores, WORK ON THOSE ESSAYS!

Nope
They said they will look at your highest sub scores but they will not recalculate your composite.

And about writing your essays over the word limit… I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s best to be concise and straight to the point. Plus, you don’t really want to come off as not being able to follow the rules :P
