Story:
I came to this boarding school in Pennsylvania as a recruit for hockey. Known for having the best hockey program in the state of Pennsylvania, people from all over the world (as close as Pennsylvania and as far as Russia, Czech Republic, Canada...etc) are recruited there regularly. In 2004, I was selected as one of the top six defensemen in the Mid-Atlantic Region (NY,NJ,PA,MD,DE) and was asked to play in many showcases. This continued until 2006 and I moved onto the new school. I had high hopes of being a pro, the first Japanese NHL hockey player. My focus was always on hockey, I had very little interest in academics. I was heavily recruited to many schools/semi-pro junior leagues, and I knew at that time that I would go to college for hockey. Then during my sophomore year, disaster happened. I had a season ending injury, and I required surgery. My grades at the time weren't absolutely atrcoious, however, my surgery required routine check ups back home in Connecticut, I missed tons of school due to the fact that I had to travel home every week and my grades dropped horribly. Not only that, recruiting stopped, I was depressed and was a horrendous mess. I then soon realized that I need to change my focus from athletics to academics. Ever since then, my academics and attitude towards school have improved dramatically.

Misc.

Essays: I will write about how my injury caused me to open my eyes and to step up.
Teacher Recs: will be VERY STRONG (one is my advisor who watched me through the whole maturing process)
Counselor letter: He will write about how my academics dropped due to my injury and extended absence from school.

Hooks: I think I'm pretty damn unique compared to some of the other asian applicants. Will that make me stand out over the other (I play piano, I play violin, I'm in the asian club) asians?

Chance me for:

Michigan
UCLA
UC Berkeley
Cornell (School of Hotel Administration)
NYU
Carnegie Mellon
BU
University of Washington
UMass Amherst
USC

How bad will my sophomore year GPA kill me..?

Thanks all.

bump…??

last bump… please?!

Based on a projected score of 2100-2200, your prestige in hockey, great essays, and fantastic recommendations that explain your situation:

Michigan–Match
UCLA–High match
UC Berkeley–Low reach
Cornell (School of Hotel Administration)–Reach
NYU–Match
Carnegie Mellon–don’t know enough about this school to give you an accurate chance
BU–Match
University of Washington–Low match/in
UMass Amherst–Safety
USC–Mid/high match

I’ve pretty much ignored your GPA, because I honestly don’t know how this will affect your chances, regardless of the recommendations you receive. I recommend creating a profile on MyChances (.net) if you haven’t already. It will give you percent chances for these schools.

All the best.

The fact that your gpa shows a strong progression, that will help the admissions off set their fears. I think you should make it in for all of them.

Not sure why you expect such a low SAT score with those SAT II scores. I would think you will be at least 2200. Additionally it seems you have a rigorous course load, and are taking the harder APS, which show that you can handle school and ECS.

Remember colleges now really look at the “whole” applicant. They sometimes accept the lower stat student that has an amazing EC resume, because it shows they have “time management” under their belt.

Are you being recruited by any of them? Have you contacted the school to see if they have hockey? If you haven’t I would. Contact the coach for your reaches (Berkeley or UMich) Many times the coach can bring you in the back door, for example, they can make the call to admissions and say, hey look at this kid, because I would love to have him on our team. A coach calling on your behalf is a good hook.

Hey thanks alot for chancing me.

I’ve been recruited to tons of semi-pro/junior programs because the number of high school hockey players going straight to DI hockey programs are very very small. I’d like to mention that the average age of a DI College hockey freshman is 20. After most hockey players graduate from high school, they play in semi-pro leagues such as the USHL, BCHL, OHL etc. to develop mentally and physically. So, no, I’ve been looked at by many colleges, and had interest letters and such, but very few coaches are going to bring an 18-year old kid in fresh out of high school.

With that said, I already decided that I could sacrifice hockey for a future in Business. That’s why Berkeley and UCLA, and some of the west-coast schools are in my list. They don’t have collegiate hockey on the west coast. However, I love hockey and its still the number one thing I’m devoted to in high school.

More chancing please? Thanks. I’ll chance back to your threads if I know enough about the schools and if you post a link in your message.

Michigan–Match
UCLA–High match because you aren’t instate
UC Berkeley–??? Difficult to say because being instate v. outofstate for the UCs changes things…
Cornell (School of Hotel Administration)–Reach
NYU–slight reach, depending on perceived GPA-ness
Carnegie Mellon-- match, especially with a good essay
BU–Match
University of Washington–Low match/in
UMass Amherst–Safety
USC-- eh… not sure. Not good at chancing UCs, like I said…

I think the upward trend will definitely help you, and I think you’ll stand out from other “stereotypical” asian applicants in a big way.

Are you getting recruited to any top universities? If their top sport is hockey I would say they have a fairly good shot of getting you in. If you are as good as you say you are, I don’t see why you wouldn’t be recruited by a fairly top school.

I still play hockey now, but doctors say that my wrist will never heal fully and that I shouldn’t play much longer. My shot speed has decreased about 10 mph since my surgery and I’ve already turned down offers to quite a few schools due to the fact that my wrist will not hold out much longer. (Hell, I need extended time to write in-class essays because I get such bad pain in my wrist). Therefore I am NOT interested in playing hockey in university. Not to mention that more than half of the schools I will be applying to (Berkeley, UCLA, USC,etc.) do not have hockey teams.
