Chance A Below Average Senior

2.4 GPA
23 ACT
Mexican-American (legal lol)
Four Years in Track/Cross Country
Have taken Social Science Honor classes for all four years
Taking Two AP classes now

Now before you start criticizing my grades, I'd like to say I also worked during high school to help support my family.

I know I probably will never go to Harvard or any other ivy league school for that matter but there is only one school I'm interested in.

My major will most likely be in Nursing.(I am a male by the way)

So my dream school is...

University of Missouri (MIZZOU)

And please don't say continue my education at a community college.

Since this schools admissions is rolling is it still possible to retake the ACT/SAT and still get accepted?

Thanks folks I really appreciate the help since I'm really having trouble sleeping at night thinking about whether I'll get in or not.

While I’m not too familiar with Mizzou, I think you have a shot. I certainly wouldn’t bank on it, though. Look into some other schools in the area, maybe U of Missouri at Kansas City or St. Louis… and check out the transfer process form those schools in case you don’t get in. If you worked to help your family and it affected your grades, make sure to mention it if you can. Most applications I’ve seen have had an area to explain whether or not you’ve had to help add income… or maybe you could address it in the essay, if there is one.

Don’t lose too much sleep over it. Going to a good college is not the most important thing in life, and you can definitely be successful in what you want to do, even if you don’t get into your dream school. Are you instate? That could make all the difference. Anyway, I hope you get in. Good luck!

Work your ass off to improve your ACT. If it’s rolling, do whatever it takes to raise it up.

yeah i think you should be able to get into mizzou.

chance back?

Your GPA is certainly holding you back
BUT if you, your teacher, or your counselor writes the dilemma you and your family encountered and how you had to work during highschool to support your family, it would make them regard your low GPA legitimate. It even may let them think your a good guy supporting your family.
And for ACT, I would try to take another one, I mean 23 is not too bad for the university your applying to, but its also not that great. I recommend you to study pretty hard (like an hour per day) and score around 28~30.

To be dead honest, you still might not get accepted even after having a legitimate excuse for your low GPA, though it is some what unlikely. However, if you score 28~30 on ACT or 1850 or above in SAT you might get in pretty easily. The university considers GPA, Test scores, and Class Rank very important, and it seems to me your lacking all three. All for now is to raise your test score, and prepare a truely clear excuse for your low GPA.

Can you tell me how much you’ve worked to support your family? This can be a big factor.

Well to gain automatic acceptance I would need a 24 ACT or a 1090 SAT. When do most seniors accept their admission offer from colleges? I’m afraid as soon as I apply, rolling admissions would be over.

Well most of the time, I would use most of it to pay utilities bills sometimes rent. Whatever I had left was my lunch money and even lunch food was expensive. (for me at least).

one last question. Should I take the ACT or SAT? I’ve never taken the SAT before but the testing date is coming up soon or should I wait for the ACT test date? Thanks again

take the sat…you might end up doing well on it. i think you have a shot, but you should definitely increase your gpa and act just to be safe. also, explain that you had to work to support your family and admissions might be easier on you. chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/605708-chances.html

Take both if you can, unless money is a problem. If so, I’d take the ACT, because you’re probably more familiar with it than the SAT.
