@noel597 As I stated in my post they are only reaches because he is out of state, I know several people from my school who don’t have stats nearly as good as him who were all accepted into UC Berkeley and UCLA, it is extremely easy if you are in state

@gtownhopeful2016 If he was in state, they’d still be reaches. And no, being in state doesn’t help you much. If anything, it’s easier out of state. Do your research before you make your claims.

I stand corrected his AA status would not help him initially. However if admitted I would think they would recruit him due to the lack of AA students on their campus. By the way according to the Cal berkeley office of undergrad admissions page it is easier to gain admission if you are in state.
In state gpa 3.89 oos 3.92. In state sat 2032 oos 2154. In state act 30 oos 32. In state meaning California Resident. It is actually a little easier to get in if you’re international than out of state.

In recent years, it doesn’t seem to matter too much. I suspect lower averages instate due to more applicants.

@noel597 I have done my research and know the stats of several students who were just accepted to UCLA and will be attending this fall, 7/8 had lower stats and no real hook. UC’s are infamous for being difficult to get into if you are out of state, even with similar stats to those who were accept in state, in the past. I will concede that the rates have increased steadily for the amount of out-of-state students at both college, but it still is not difficult to get accepted into UCLA. I mean a little over 10% of kids at my school were accepted and only 3 of those had taken an AP outside of AP spanish and only those 3 kids had an SAT score above 2000.

@gtownhopeful2016 an EIGHT person sample size? lol. Why don’t you look at what UCLA actually publishes, which is inclusive of ALL applicants. That simply isn’t true. OOS is not that bad for admissions.
Are you kidding that it isn’t hard to get into UCLA? You SERIOUSLY need to look at the freshman profile, the acceptance rate, and the results post on college confidential.
Your “beloved” Georgetown is probably at the same caliber as UCLA, so you’re definitely discounting UCLA’s prestige. It is VERY hard to get into. That you think otherwise suggests that you haven’t done your research. A sample size of 8 people is small, and thus your perception is inaccurate.

I bet you think Berkeley is harder to get into than UCLA too… For the record, they’re about the same in difficulty of acceptance (though Berkeley compsci is crazy)

@noel597 those are the 8 people going out of around the 13 that were accepted, which still isn’t a lot but the same thing happens year after year at our school, with similar stats. The fact is UCLA is not as difficult to get in to as you make out to be. Also, my username is a joke that me and my friends came up with that you wouldn’t understand unfortunately. I did look at the freshman profile and it seems as if all of his stats would fall in around the 50th percentile which makes him a competitive applicant.

comparing his stats to the preliminary results for 2014

Average admitted weighted GPA: 4.39 vs 4.3
Average admitted unweighted GPA: 3.89 vs 3.5
SAT Composite(75th percentile, 25th is 1950) 2,240 vs 2,150

Compared to those who were accepted RD this year at CC, he also has very similar stats. It is a high match/ low reach and that is my opinion based off of the posted stats and my knowledge of people attending and those who have attended.

@gtownhopeful2016 How on earth is a 3.5 comparable to a 3.9 LOL

@noel597 How is a 90 average “low”?

@KiaraInNYC
- a 3.5 isn’t a 90 average…
- FOR THE SCHOOLS LISTED (the BEST in the country), yes. A 3.5 IS EXTREMELY LOW.

@noel597 So his unweighted is a bit lower, everything else is right on track. Also note that is the UC’s recalculated GPA which often raises the GPA of the person applying, even so all of his other stats are right where they need to be for him to have a great shot

@gtownhopeful2016 Ok, well OP didn’t give us that information, so no, you can’t really assume. I disagree completely, and would call both schools mid-high reaches. Even if that GPA is really 3.6 or 3.65, that is still far too low.

I guess we can agree to disagree about his chances, not like it has any real bearing anyway.
