Chance a Canadian for 2014!

Hey guys, I'm a rising senior, and I was hoping to get chanced. I'm thinking of applying to (not applying to all of them though, hahaha) Brown, Columbia, U Penn, Cornell, Georgetown, Stanford, Duke, NYU, Tufts, U Chicago, and (reaches, I know) Harvard and Yale. U Chicago is my top choice.

My (public) school doesn't have AP courses, or an IB program, but I've taken the most rigorous schedule possible, and my GPA is around 3.9-4.0. My school doesn't rank, either, but I'm probably in the top ten or top five students out of around 400. For the record, I'm in Ontario, Canada.

SATs: 2260
CR 740
M 770
W 750

I plan to take Chem, U.S. History and French SAT Subject Tests in October.

ECs:
Professional on-camera and voice actor based in Toronto (very busy, especially in 9, 10): 9, 10, 11, 12
French Horn player in school band (1st chair in 11, 12): 9, 10, 11, 12
Student Council Member (Grade 9 Representative, Independent 11, Student Body President 12): 9, 11, 12
Lead in school production of Macbeth: 10
Vocal training and performances at seniors’ homes: 9, 10
Kids Help Phone Student Ambassador and Barrie Chapter primary SA: 11, 12
Editor-in-Chief of school newspaper (founded 11): 11, 12
Head and founder of school writer’s guild: 12
Presidential Classroom Future World Leaders’ Summit: summer ’09

I'm not afraid of the application essay(s), as I'm a pretty good writer, and I'll have some very good recommendations. I want to apply for political science.

What do you think? Let me know!

Ka-bumpity.

Well, the fact that you have no APs might be a slight problem. However, the professional actor extracurricular is STELLAR, as well as the rest of them too. SATs are good as well.

In my opinion, colleges will be gobbling you up. You sound very unique on paper, and sound rather intelligent. I would say you are good for all those schools, especially Brown. Your extracurriculars set you far apart from the rest :)

I’d appreciate a chance as well, if you don’t mind  http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/738568-chance-me.html</a></p>

Thanks so much! Fingers crossed. Haha! Anyone else? I’ll chance back, promise.

You have great stats, to say the least. Everything you need is there. Just try to score above 750 on two of those SAT IIs and you will be set. The only thing downside is that you’re an international!

With that said…
Brown: Low Reach
Columbia: Reach
U Penn: Low Reach
Cornell: Low Reach
Georgetown: Match
Stanford: High Reach
Duke: Match
NYU: Low Match
Tufts: Match
U Chicago: Match
Harvard and Yale: High Reaches, but you know that

Best of luck!

Thanks so much! I’ll be studying pretty hard for the Subject Tests.

Do they consider Canadian applicants under the international category? If so, that could make it a bit harder for you to get into some US schools.

Brown: Reach
Columbia: Medium-High Reach
U Penn: Low Reach
Cornell: High Match
Georgetown: High Match
Stanford: High Reach
Duke: High Match
NYU: Very Low Match/High Safety
Tufts: Medium-High Match
U Chicago: Match
Harvard: High Reach
Yale: High Reach

If you were a US citizen you probably would have even better chances (sad but true I think…unless Canada isn’t considered to be in the international pool)

I heard Canadians are considered in the same pool as US applicants…

It depends on the college. For the most part, Canadians are considered internationals, though they usually are the best-represented national group. Occasionally, we get lumped in with US applications, but not very often at all.

I think that you are a very competitive applicant, bring a lot to the table, and clearly have worked hard to get to where you are, but (and I am in the same boat here) in today’s ultra-competitive admissions scene, there are thousands of other kids with the same stats, and being international might hurt you. I think you have a solid list, as long as you mix in a safety or two, and you should run with it and see what happens!

Brown - reach
Columbia - reach
Penn - reach
Cornell - low reach
Georgetown - reach
Stanford - reach
Duke - low reach
NYU - match
Tufts - match
UChicago - low reach
Harvard - reach
Yale - reach

Best of luck! Please chance me if you have the time: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/738605-chance-me-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Thanks! Anyone else?

You don’t really have any safeties. I mean there is no way you will get rejected from all of those schools, but it might help just to have a safety!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/738616-do-my-sat-scores-ruin-my-chances-ill-chance-back.html</a></p>

I agree with clg210. Your stats are solid but not stellar and the competition this year for applicants was fierce. Being Canadian puts you into the international pool which makes it even harder. You didn’t mention if you need financial aid or not. I would add not just safety schools but some schools that are easier to get into.

I’m actually applying to a few universities here in Ontario as safeties. They’re really not worth mentioning - I’m not worried at all about getting in to them.

Bump de bump a bump!

Bump again.

Your SAT scores seem very well-rounded (I’m totally lopsided with my reading score!) and your ECs are pretty outstanding, especially being a professional actor. It’s a shame that your school didn’t have AP classes, but the colleges can’t blame you for not taking them. I think you’ll get into the majority of your schools, including UChicago (I might apply there too, Chicago is a great city!) Good luck!

Thanks, good luck to you!

Bumppppppp

You dont need AP classes to take AP Courses, study individually and sign up for AP tests. That will increase your chances.
