Hi!
I'm a Chinese Canadian from Vancouver, BC. I'm a senior at a top ranked public school in the city, and I applied for Biochem as my first choice, and an undeclared engineering as my second.

My stats are as follows:

GPA: 3.4 UW (we don't use GPA but this is just averaging out letter grades)
ACT: 31 Comp, 33 Math, 30 Eng, 33 Reading, 27 Sci, Writing 8

Honours/APs: Our school offers 3 APs which I am currently taking. I have been in Enriched English and taken senior courses in my junior year, and junior courses in my sophomore year.

ECs: Piano since grade 5, secretary of student council, president and co-founder of a youth council at a community center, golf club member for 3 years, Columbia summer school in Physics, interned for a professor at the University of New South Wales in Australia.

Rank: school doesn't rank

I don’t think UCLA has undeclared engineering…

With a 3.4UW, UCLA’s gonna be a reach. 31ACT will be fairly average in the pool of applicants, but who knows, the UCs may decide to admit more internationals this year.

There is undeclared engineering/applied science listed under alternate majors. I’m still not too sure about my GPA as again my school doesn’t use the GPA system, but I believe that’s what it averages out to. Not too sure if there’s any kind of converting of any sort before calculating though.

If your gpa is in the top 5 -10% (top 5 really) at your school, your academics look decent. But why you would pay over $220,000 for a Bachelors degree, when there are excellent schools right there in Canada, I’m not exactly sure. Write good essays, and you’ll have a decent chance.

I’m choosing to go to UCLA mostly because of the opportunities offered in the states that I can’t get back home. Last year one person from our school got accepted into UCLA, and not too many people apply to state schools, but many of the students from my school end up in UBC, McGill, or U of T. Again, our school doesn’t rank so I’m not too sure where I place. I do know of many other people from different schools applying to UCLA though, but for now it’s just me applying from my school (that I know of).
