chance a chronic worrier! :)

Hello!

I've applied to Georgetown (EA), Illinois Wesleyan University, Depauw University, University of Illinois (ew), Scripps College (for JES Scholarship), and I still plan to apply to Northwestern University and University of Chicago.

Georgetown is probably my top choice, but I'd be happy at almost all of those except U of I (parents forced me to apply there for safety).

I plan to major in English with a possible minor/double major in History (European or US).

White, Jewish girl from suburbs of Chicago
GPA: 4.47 UW/4.93 W (this is my low point)
Rank: 77/513 (v. competitive public school)
Senior Year Courses: AP English, Creative Writing, Instrumental Ensemble (class specifically for percussion), AP Calculus AB, AP Economics Micro/Macro, and Harmony and Arranging (Intro to Music Theory and Composition). As well as a standard lunch/gym period because I live in Illinois where P.E. is required, ick.
ACT: 34 (31E, 34M, 34R, 35S)
SAT IIs: Math 2 770, Literature 710, U.S. History 700
APs taken: World History 4, English Language 4, U.S. History 5
Plan to take the tests for all the APs I'm taking this year

Essays: CommonApp essay was about my decision to drop out of my Jewish education class through my local synagogue and the circumstances that led me towards my crisis of faith. Not overly religious, but just talked about my ideals and when I was faced with an ethical dilemma. GU essay was about writers spending time abroad, and how Georgetown was the France to my Fitzgerald, Spain to my Hemingway, etc. Also discussed low GPA/rank and asking for a chance to broaden my horizons and challenge myself some more. VERY strong essays according to both of my AP English teachers (last year's and this year's).

ECs/Community Service
Marching Band -- 4 years -- Section/Squad leader my last two years
Symphonic Band -- 2 years -- Principal percussion both years
Orchestra -- 3 years -- Principal percussion last two years
Jazz Band -- 3 years -- Co-principal rhythm section last two years
Writing Works (in-school tutor) -- 2 years -- bulk of my community service
Debate -- 2 years -- senior leader/research editor
School paper -- 1 year -- featured editorial writer by invitation
Literary magazine -- 3 years -- regular contributor
Jewish Youth Group -- 2 years -- regular volunteer work until end of sophomore year when time ran out

So what do you guys think? I hear from GU soon and I'm really curious! I know my GPA/rank are kind of low; I go to a highly competitive public school and try to do work honestly. We have a LOT of gpa/grade-grubbers who miss test days/cheat/copy a lot and I've tried to do everything as honestly as possible. My grades most accurately reflect what I have been able to do myself.

Thanks! :)

Georgetown (EA)- reach
Illinois Wesleyan University- IN
Depauw University- IN
University of Illinois (ew)- IN
Scripps College (for JES Scholarship)- reach with scholarship
Northwestern University- high match
University of Chicago- reach

pls chance back!

thank you!

how do you figure that northwestern is a high match when u of c is a reach? aren't they equivalent?

University of Chicago reach
Northwestern high match
Gerogetown match
I'm sorry I don't know much about the rest schools.

GPA: 4.47 UW/4.93 W (this is my low point)

^ What scale does your school do GPA on?

our gpa is on a 5 point scale but you can get a 6 point "bonus" for taking ap classes. so it's properly out of 5 but you can have a gpa above 5.0. my school reports gpas on a 5.0 scale to colleges.

so is it that bad? i've always considered it kind of low for a school like georgetown.

You've got a good shot at all of those except for Gtown and UChi - those two are reaches.
Uchicago looks a lot at essays so you can use that to your advantage.
Good luck!
Chance me back?

thanks! i hope to write some really strong essays for uchi over the next few weeks (i have basic outlines for all of them). how much does georgetown look at essays? mine were VERY strong and VERY original. i'm hoping they could tip the scale.

i'll see what i can do when i have some more time! :)

Georgetown (EA)- low reach
Illinois Wesleyan University- In
Depauw University- In
University of Illinois (ew)- In
Scripps College (for JES Scholarship)- in (scholarship may be reach)
Northwestern University- match
University of Chicago- low reach

chance me?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/612581-will-my-math-keep-me-out.html

what did you mean by "low reach"? is that good or bad?

I'd say you're in at IWU and DePauw.

i think a lot of ppl are underestimating the strength of northwestern's applicant pool; i'd say its a reach, along with georgetown and u of chicago

BUMP!

i will definitely chance other people back! :)

hey frantastic... as you can see several other people have put that UofC is a reach and Northwestern is a high match or something equivalent (hethune and aem08... and bvrian to some extent). I say just go and give it your best shot. You're essays will be the defining factor but I believe you can do it!

thanks so much! you all have been so kind and i value your inputs. :) i hope to take the next few weeks to really polish up my essays before my last apps go out.

Coming from the Chicago suburbs won't help with NW and UofC. I still think you have a legitimate shot at getting in. IWU and Depauw are good schools and with your stats you will qualify for a nice merit award.
