Chance a current junior please!

I am a junior - Asian American (great, I know!)

However, unlike most of my peers I am NOT by any means a "math/science" person, though I do love math, I love english/humanities wayyyy more!

Here's a break down of my stats as of right now:

Rank: 3/ 550 people --> though this year, my classes along with ECs have been extremely difficult. So im hoping I can maintain that level even after exams, which are coming up so soon!

GPA: 4.7 (out of 4 due to weighting)
Class load: hardest possible no doubt!
ACT: score without much studying - 29 (however, I will make SURE this goes up by June. My goal is a 32+ and im quite confident that i can do it with proper prep. Im studying!)

ECs: (I think this is the stronger portion of my app...let me know ur opinions..)

Editor-in-chief of School Paper - first junior to become one in a looong time, i am absolutely certain that the newspaper advisor will write me a first class rec!

Question: Our school paper won a national award from columbia university (silver crown) during my time this year as EIC, is something I should mention? This award is not directed to me specfically but more to our entire paper. I think it's appealing as it is an award recogonizing the top few papers internationally and is from columbia itself.

Founder and manager of newspaper website

Awarded Outstanding web-designer by IU

Write for other community papers as well, including our cultural one.

Many essay competition awards; won 1st place in state for a newspaper article I wrote. That same article won 4th place nationally at another competiton (which i will not list here for security reasons as you can easily look me up)

History fair state finalist/winner, potential national qualifer (will find out in a couple weeks!)

Internship at congressman office summer before junior year

Likely to obtain internship at Senate Office this summer (already applied! From the looks of it, the intern coordinator seemed enthusiastic when I called her, so hopefully this works out for me!)
***NOte: i have no connections whatsoever, i know i wont be able to tell this to admissions officers but i just feel better after letting u all know =)

Teen Rep on local Youth Commisson - began this system of teen reps to help form better student-community alliances

Founder of a community service council for multicultural students (we help out at various community festivals, represent the youth, currently planning a cultural show and a trip abroad to India)

500+ volunteer service hours through hospital volunteering (the usual lol), tutoring, after school enrichment program helping for younger children, etc. etc.

Nominated and will be attending Girls State

State Pageant winner (first runner up) and miss talented

Math Honor Society President
Founder and manager of club website (to submit service hours, updates on events, etc)

NAtional Honor Society (running for Pres., we'll see what happens!)

French Honor Society

DECA state winner

I have several other ECs but I feel that these are my main ones and the ones that I am most proud to be involved in!

What do you think??

I think you have very impressive EC’s and good grades/GPA/rank.
However, I’d say get your ACT up to a 32/33 and you’ll be a very, very solid contender for Cornell.
Good job, and keep it up!

Thanks! Omg u have no idea how bad I want to get my ACT score up, I really don’t want it to stick out like a sore thumb on my app! Ahhh! I wish i studied harder the first time around!

Oh well, hopefully I can reach my goal in the coming months!

Thanks for your insight though…couldn’t appreciate it more!

No problem, I think you can do it.
Maybe try the SAT as well? Maybe some SAT IIs, too?

Otherwise, I think you have a strong shot.
But don’t quote me on it, your essays have to be spot on, and Cornell is big on fit.

Yeah, I feel that I am pretty good with essays since I have a fairly strong English background and can get some valuable advice from my newspaper advisor. I did try the SAT and that was definitely not for me! If anything, I think the time constraints are a benefit for me on the ACT because I know I perform my best under pressure. It’s really a matter of practicing the Science Section and some math stuff for me i guess…

And yes, I forgot to mention, I do plan on take USH SAT II as well as MATH IIC and perhaps one other one just in case my scores don’t match up to what I would like them to be…

Are you a male? Being a male asian apparently gives some kind of disadvantage. If you did mention gender, sorry. I didn’t read your chance too thoroughly

no lol im a female hence the pageant winner status lol…

And also, forgot to say it…congrats to both of you for getting into cornell! U must be sooo excited, I know i would be!

We are! (At least I know I am).

I’ll be visiting tomorrow, so psyched. Just made my tentative schedule of events… I’m going to be very busy.

@hardworker - sorry, my mistake. anyway, if you’re going into english then the newspaper awards and ECs should definately help because Cornell is all about fit.

@Chandler - I’m going next friday. Are the campus settings going to be the determinant factor for your decision between Cornell and Williams?

ImReachingForIt: It’s going to be a big determining factor, yeah. I’m already leaning towards Williams, but if I absolutely love Cornell today (I’m leaving in like five minutes) I might accept Cornell’s offer.
But the way my Cornell Days schedule looks like I’ll be eating my next meal at around 6:15… lmao
