Chance a deferred EA applicant

Hi all.

I wanna be straightforward - My GPA is not that great (debatably bad), but i'm trying to be the candidate who can compensate with ECs/Testing. What are my chances at getting into uMich after being deferred in the early round?

I'm an Indian (as in the asian variety xD)
Go to one of most competitive public schools in MA

Taking Psych, Spanish, and Stats this year predicted all 5's

Statistics H/AP

Reccomendations:
Math Department Head (BC calc teacher) - has very high opinion of me and should give excellent rec
English III H teacher - likes me as a person .. didn't do to well in her class (got a B year avg). will prlly have a good insight into my personality though.
Counselor rec - idk too much of what the counselor thinks of me.. BUT she's writing her rec based on the recs which i'm getting from outside school which are - 1. TyE Business Competition Mentor and 2. MIT professor who i did an internship with (Both EXTREMELY strong recs)

Extra curriculars... (100 million over here). Listed in order of descending importance:

~Gap here because those 3 up there are the most important of the ECs~

So... how do i compete?

Thanks all!! and feel free to ask me to chance you as well. I don't know how well i'll be able to do, but i'll give my best effort.

Wow if you were deferred, either UMich really values high GPA, or admissions were very competitive this year…either way I think you have a good chance of getting in. If not UMich, I’m sure you’ll find another great school that will meet your needs!

^^Michigan values a high unweighted GPA. If you look at the common data set on college websites there is a “chart” that will show what factors are most valued.

For Michigan, GPA and high school rigor are ranked “Very Important” link below:

<a href=“Office of Budget and Planning”>Office of Budget and Planning;

I agree- Michigan really values the GPA and class rigor. My son was accepted EA. Best of luck.

thanks for the input guys. anyone else have any thoughts?

Wow, as long as you were able to show interest and passion about all those EC’s in your app, I see you having a great chance of getting in.

On a side note, I wouldn’t count on a 5 for AP Spanish (Lang I’m assuming). Even as a Hispanic, I got a 4 taking it Junior year. There are so many true native speakers that take the exam that even if you get an A in the class, you aren’t guaranteed a 5.

Woah xD now I’m scared for the Spanish aP. Oh well lol if i get a 4, i get a 4. Big whoop xD. Anyway thanks for the advice i think i did elaborate enough on my ec’s

Wow, those are some really good stats! To be honest, I’m guessing the only real reason you were deferred was because of your GPA (I’ve seen a ton of really highly qualified applicants get deferred this year because of GPA alone). I’d say you have a really good shot at UMich, just make sure to update them with any information if it changes (new leadership roles, grade updates, etc) and show continued interest in the school. Best of luck!

I wouldn’t really worry about AP Spanish. I am not a native speaker and I found it pretty easy and got a 5, as did most of my friends. Just my two cents, it won’t affect admissions anyway. Good luck!

@sapharodon: lol i wish. I don’t think i’m gunna get any new leadership roles this year. Grades are looking ok, altho not stellar (mainly due to my getting destroyed 2nd term in multivariable calculus by the harsh grading curve). Thanks!

@callie101: Thanks for the heads up xD. yeah that’s why i’m not too worried. Thanks!

bumping!!!

What is your single highest sat score from one test? Michigan does not super score.

2240 (640, 800, 800)

Mmm, that may be another issue, as you know that CR score is on the low end. Too bad they don’t superscore… there is really not much you can do except let them know you are still very interested (if they are your first choice let them know), and send any updates on your ECs.

Would it be worth mentioning that my south Asian a cappella group is performing soon for the Indian republic day in front of multiple hundreds of people?

It is def not your SAt that deferred you…plain and simple; GPA…and since there are deferrees every year in the 3.6-3.8 range, I can’t imagine a 3.5 is going to be plucked…

Why would UMich all of a sudden devalue UW GPA after EA? They will pluck the deferrals from the highest GPA’s the same way they chose in the first place…

For those of you on CC many many years, this has never changed; not sure why you think it would now…

Check out the acceptance threads…there are a bunch of high GPA low SAt/ACT kids accepted every year…

Michigan isn’t going to devalue GPA…for years and years and years that and rigor have been the two “most important” with standardized test scores, recommendations and essay being important and everything else being considered. OP no one here can tell you what the outcome can be and all you can do is tell them you will come if you are accepted (especially if cost is not a factor as I see your are from another state.) and send anything in they request. The best thing to do for reach schools, and Michigan was a reach for you, is to just settle back and see what happens. Make sure you have an option at another college and simply be thrilled if Michigan works out for you.

Thanks for the honest answer momofthreeboys! I see what you mean.

God… being deferred absolutely sucks. I sent them an email addressing more of the updates that have come about during my Senior year, along with a statement basically saying that if I’m accepted, I am 100% certainly going to go to UMich. I guess it’s all I can do, make sure they know I have continued interest. :P

Yeah getting deferred is so annoying -.-
