What I've done 1st semester:

-Got a recommendation from my psychology teacher, who said to me, "Hell yeah you'll get in! You're one of the best students I've had all semester"
-Visited the school!
-Created an envelope with a letter explaining that I love the school and I'm doing what I can and yadda yadda, included the original award winning drawing from junior year and my original silver honor roll award. I was going to hand deliver it to the admissions officer...but she was on vacation...the secretaries took and let me put a post-it on it explaining that "I had intended to hand deliver this letter to you, but you're not here. As much as I would love to come back, I live nine hours away. Thank you for reading this!"
-Sent out my midyear grades!

What do you think?

Seeing as your GPA increased and your EC’s are good I think you’ll get in. Especially if your recs and essays are good. Hopefully you get in Good luck at UNC

Please Chance Back

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/660934-chances-brown.html</a></p>

I think you got deferred because of the number of in-state applications this year due to the economy and because you didn’t challenge yourself too much i think. To be honest, i wouldn’t keep up your hopes too much, because of the reasons above plus the acceptance rate for deferred applications- is on the low end.

how low? do you mean like…a 40 percent low or a 5 percent low…

ouch. well…that seems like honest info…haven’t heard anything like it, so thanks…I guess I’ll just keep my fingers crossed!

i’m not too familiar with the school, but i think i know enough to have an opinion:

SATs: checked quick on collegeboard, your score fit into their middle 50% except for your CR, which is above the mid 50. so those are good!

GPA: low but not unheard of for UNC, and it will very likely help that your high school is in the top hundred.

your essay sounds like it could be really strong: i doubt many kids write about their autism. so that’s a definite plus. and the pysch rec sounds like it will be pretty sweet too. their collegeboard profile lists the essay and recommendations as very important admissions factors.

i’m not sure what their stats are on accepting deferred students, but i think that since your stats have gone up since they deferred you, you have a really good shot since you were close in the first place.

my heart really goes out to you, i think i would rather be flat-out rejected than deferred, i wouldnt be able to sleep at night. best of luck!

wait though, wouldn’t they want out of state in a bad economy, so they could get more money? cause I do have the money to pay…I figure that would put me at an advantage in hard times (as sucky as that sounds)

edit: “my heart really goes out to you, i think i would rather be flat-out rejected than deferred, i wouldnt be able to sleep at night. best of luck!”

HAH! not sleeping at night, welcome to my life. i’ve got cool backups but none i love nearly as much =']

the day of EA notification I was thinking to myself “wow…it would really suck to get deferred…” speak of the devil.

i don’t know the exact numbers but i imagine it would be close to 30%, chapel-hill i know for a fact is 7% another state school… BUT i thought you might want this advice found it somewhere-
If Wilmington truly is where you want to go, don’t sit back and wait. Write the letter they requested explaining that UNCW is your first choice, why, and sell yourself! If you have taken an additional SAT or ACT and scored higher, let them know. If your grades were good first semester and your GPA has gone up, let them know. If you are the first generation in your family to attend college, tell them. If you have something unique to offer their student body, if you are particularly impressed with a certain program or environment at the campus… This letter is an opportunity for you to make your case for why they should change your status from “deferred” to “admitted.”

well, chapel hill is chapel hill. they’re a step below ivy…wilmington is considerably lower than that I would think.

I did everything you said that I could. The letter, the visit, the awesome good grades senior year…etc…my GPA went up a lot…

Thank you for your advice :)

i hate to say the b word…bump

honestly, you sound like you have a great shot…i would just keep doing what youre doing…I’d give you a 70% chance…but just dont slip up
now its my turn
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/661839-chances-chances-everywhere-but-not-drop-drink.html</a></p>

b…is for bump…

i know this is annoying…but im still looking for help =[[ ill chance back!!

Where else did you apply? If you were instate, I would feel better about your chances at UNC-W, but out of state, I don’t know.

I don’t know much about UNC, but I’m sure your essay will work to your advantage.

Thank you for your chance btw :]

The in-state apps are probably loading their inboxes, so your deferral may not be on an academic basis (just so you know). However, the junior year GPA drop is not exactly a high point of your career, but the way you turned that around and got a 3.8 Senior Year is actually a nice point.

If your essay expressed some real personality (your not some essay class robot), and the in-state apps are overloading their quota, then I’d say you have a high match/low reach at the moment, although deferrals can be for anything, so you may be in already, but if they don’t reach their quota then you aren’t.

I think that you’ll get in with an awesome essay :]

If they take into account your personal problems I think you gave a great chance. All your stats stack up and if you really conveyed that you loved the school in the essays i think your chances are strong.
Good Luck! I hope you get in.

I think you have a good chance, assuming you’re essay is top-notch and that everything else is okay.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-essays/667620-essay-about-autism.html</a></p>

You guys talk about if my essay is “top-notch…” What do you think?

Well, UNCW was actually ranked 1 for most desired college for a while. So, that might bring your chances down a little.
I still think you can get in though, because of all the EC’s that you have.
Good luck~
