In terms of advantages, I'm a male hispanic (low socioeconomic status) and my parents did not go to college

My counselor lables schools as either a safety, match, or reach and from what I have seen, you guys do to. I would really appreciate it if you guys could do the same
These are the schools I am looking in to:

Yale
Columbia
Princeton
UPenn
Duke
Cornell
Dartmouth
MIT (?)
Vandy
Johns Hopkins
UCA Berkelely
UCLA

science/history major

Im deciding among Yale, Princeton, and Penn to apply early

What do you guts think? Thank you for any input :)

“I’m a male hispanic (low socioeconomic status) and my parents did not go to college”

I think you will get into many “great” colleges.

Well, I dont know what you mean by “great”, but I really hope those things can help me! lol

Bump, please

Yale - reach
Columbia - reach
Princeton - reach
UPenn - high match
Duke - match
Cornell - match
Dartmouth - match
MIT - reach, but are you absolutely sure you want to go here? you seem interested in more of a lib arts education.
Vandy - match
Johns Hopkins - match
UCA Berkelely - safety (This isn’t ACTUALLY a safety, but for you it is)
UCLA - same

I’d say in at the majority of these places. The only detriment might be your ECs. They seem really typical and cookie cutter with little to no involvement.

baconsalad, thanks for your input. I hear that a lot about my ECs and unfortunately, I have no idea what I can do to improve. However, I dont get what you mean by little to no involvement? EIther way, thanks for the input! :)

Did you do anything tangible in your clubs besides being a member or an officer? Club memberships mean next to nothing unless you actually did something in them. For example, what was the environmental awareness club about? What kinds of things were you a part of in Habitat for Humanity?

That being said, you shouldn’t worry too much. A low income, high stat URM is hard to find, and a lot of the schools on your list would accept you in a hearbeat.

Calling any ivy a match is naive. I think as a low income, first gen, Hispanic student you have a fair chance, but all ivies, Duke and MIT must be considered reaches.

Haha, unfortunately Waverly, I must agree with you. For clubs like environmental awareness, we are in charge of collecting recyclabes after school every Friday and some other small things. FOr Habity for Humanity, we build houses

Small things like those won’t give much weight, and don’t look impressive. Try getting more involved, maybe? And sorry, I might have been a bit overzealous in chancing you. The ivies are, obviously, crapshoots for everyone.

Thank you so much for all of your advice, everyone!

If you think you can improve your SAT score, I think it would be beneficial to retake it. There comes a point where its not worth retaking, but I think it would help tons if you could get close to or above 2300. Otherwise ECs are ok i mean. I disagree with baconsalad, at school the best you can do is get a leadership position. In that aspect I think you are great. Volunteering is great too. However, you are lacking major ECs and awards. I mean, all your clubs don’t really do much. Have you done anything that involves doing stuff that can be recognized. I mean for example what does chemistry club do? I would think it does nothing. Maybe chemistry help or discussion? Ehh colleges sont really care for that too much besides the leadership aspect.
