I live in New Jersey and I am half Chinese and half white (I'm putting down white on the app, but I have an Asian last name).

I go to a really good private boarding school in Massachusetts which sends probably 70 percent of its class to top 25 Universities or top 20 colleges. There is no class rank or GPA, and there are very few ap classes. Also, nobody ever gets straight As.

So I have a B+ ish average with an upward trend.

SATS - 2220 - 740,740,740
SAT IIs - US History 740, Math I 680 (yeah)

These are the highlights of my extras
- 2 sport varsity athlete
- paid intern at local newspaper in Jersey.
- Debate president
- Model UN
- An editor of school newspaper.

I want to major in English

So with that what are my chances at these schools:

Carnegie Mellon
Rice
Michigan
Northwestern
Tufts
Claremont Mckenna
Colgate
Wisconsin (Applying before November 1st)
Bates
Rochester
Tulane
USC

I can’t give you a good idea for some of the schools that you posted, but I can help with the ones that I know (at least a little bit)

Tufts will depend a lot on your essays and demonstrated interest - with your scores and good GPA (i know boarding school curriculum is tougher) you should be in there pending those requisites.

Wisconsin I would say you’re in, even as an OOS although I am not familiar with their application.

Tulane and USC I would say in as well, although Tulane recently started sending out free applications in an effort to lower their admission rate most likely, but you still should be a shoo-in there.

Michigan may be a little tougher as an OOS, perhaps for Ross, but I would think also with some good essays you should be fine.

If you don’t mind, please chance me as well!

ehhh, you’ll get in everywhere…but Northwestern, maybe USC? Also, Tufts might think you are the asian kid applying to harvard w/ Tufts as a backup. Your grades certainly could be better. Also, ecs…anything original? Still, you look like an awesome candidate providing your teachers don’t savage you or say you are a math/science instrument playing asian.

Actually, I’ve rethought this. Coming from a Mass boarding school. you are prob rich. with that kind of money you should be pulling an A- average at least and 2300. You might be able to squeeze into an eastern establishment school like colgate, but honestly. You need to be looking at like Occidental, Chico?..etc. You still have a shot at these other prestigious schools, but you should be more focused on fit and not expect to get in…ok, chance me.

Ask your counselor, it’s a whole different game from the preps and you won’t get much help here that knows the factors involved. I’d also discuss checking white with an Asian last name with your counselor.

What school do you go to? I went to Milton Academy freshman year, but financial issues took control and my parents had to bring me back to Illinois. But, yes, the east coast academies send most of their kids to top colleges.

Private schools are really strange for admission (I know my son goes to one). This is what I think

Carnegie Mellon - match
Rice - reach
Michigan - match
Northwestern - reach
Tufts - ehh matchish
Claremont Mckenna -high match/low reach
Colgate - low match
Wisconsin (Applying before November 1st) - low match/safety.
Bates - match
Rochester - low match/safety
Tulane - low match
USC - high match (really hard to get into for some reason)

I’d say that Rice and USC are matches. You should be in at Tulane, Wisconsin and Tufts and Michigan (but u never know about them). I dunno about the rest.
