Recap:
Honestly i would be content with just getting into FSU at this point.
Greatest weakness is unweighted GPA, What do colleges look at the most? unweighted? or weighted? As well as ive retaken a significant amount of classes due to IB, Any advice on essays?

I think you can definitely get into the schools you mentioned, but getting the SAT higher will increase the chances.

I think your chances are decent, your extra curriculars are definitely good, and your school scores aren’t half bad. See how you do on the ACT, as some people do considerably better on the ACT than the SAT, like the last poster said, make sure you bring up the SAT score if you can. Good luck.

Chance me as well please :)

You are matches or safeties for all of those schools. Being URM and a recruited athlete really helps. You should talk about your disease in your essays if it really affected you.

Unlike the last two posters, I completely disagree about your chances at FSU. As someone who has both applied and was accepted to FSU, getting in is actually harder than people believe. However, you still have decent shot, provided you make some serious effort. Here are my tips.

1) Study for those ACTs. Put aside 4 hours every weekend, do a practice test, and don’t get off schedule. Aim for a 30 or 31 to compensate for your grades.

2) PULL THAT UW GPA UP. It’s going to kill your chances. Again, study your ass off. IB is a lot of work, but you get what you put into it. From the minute you get home from practice, until 10 at night, do nothing but study. It’s not fun, but at this point, you’re going to need mostly As to get that UW GPA to where it needs to be. Aim for a 3.3 unweighted and 3.8 weighted by the end of the year.

3) AP scores aren’t great. Don’t report the 2, report the 3s because they’re passing, and actually crack a book before May. Take 3 hours every morning during spring break and see if you can get 4s/5s on your AP exams this year.

4) Start your own club (make yourself president), appoint officers as necessary. Keep up with the rest of your clubs, both your leadership and participation should be fine for FSU.

5) Do some more community service in the summer, really make it stand out on your application. Aim for 200 more hours.

6) Consider dual-enrolling in a summer class at your local community college if your school offers it (for example, my school does it with PBSC). They’re free and they’re given AP weight on your transcripts, so as long as you dedicate the time to get an A (you’ll only have to worry about one class in the summer), it’ll improve your GPA immensely.

7) Keep up with your recruited sport. That’s your ticket. Also, good hooks.

8) As soon as the FSU essay prompts come out, look at them. That’s around mid-August. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE WEEK BEFORE TO START. Write, rewrite, and have teachers edit your essays as soon as possible. Write about the sickle cell thing and explain how working through it helped you “overcome adversity” and how it made you a more determined person. If you actually manage to bring your GPA up, you can also link the upturn in your grades to overcoming challenges. Colleges love that stuff.

Agree with the above poster. I think you have a pretty good shot at USF. UCF, okay chances, but so many people apply nowadays its hard to say. It’s going to be harder for UF and FSU (unless you are like a big athlete and are gonna get a scholarship). They really do care about academics so your low grades and test scores hurt your chances.

I got accepted into FSU this year, and my SAT score was only a 1640 and my ACT score was a 26. I think you will get in easily because soooo many people at my school got in and I was shocked at some of the idiots who got accepted. As a fellow Floridian, I think you will be fine getting in

I think you’ll be fine. I know a bunch of people who didn’t have stellar stats but were able to get into selective schools because of their extracurriculars, etc… Don’t worry about it (:
