Chance a Former Slacker, Rising Senior

Hi guys,
I used to be a huge slacker. I didn't do homework , never studied for tests, did nothing after school...It was a disaster. Then about halfway through my sophomore year I realized that what I was doing was gonnna hurt me in the long run. From that point on I never recieved below a B. However, the damage had alraedy done,as my freshman year GPA was pretty low and my sophomore year GPA was just ok. This year I had a huge improvement and really did as well as I know I can.

So heres my stats, and let me know what you think.

Freshman year: 2.78 GPA
Sophomore Year: 3.14 GPA (Honors English)
Junior Year: 3.72 GPA (AP Gov, Honors English, History, Business classes. Awaiting AP exam score for AP Gov)

Cumulative GPA: 3.23

School doesn't weight.

I go to a top 10 school in NJ, and we typically do very well at most colleges (Northern Highlands)

took SAT's Twice:
First time: 610 Math, 620 Reading, 640 Writing 1870 total.
Second time: 610 Math , 620 Reading, 680 writing, 1910 total.
Considering taking a third time come october.

E.C's
DECA Member/ Participant (reached states) Junior Year -Senior Year
Stock Market club member freshman year
Big Brother Program Participant Junior year (Program was cut by state)
Summer Camp CIT for one year, then Counselor the last two years.
Worked at my mom's real estate office as an assistant for a little while.
Bowling Team JV junior year, may do again this coming year.
Rec Basketball up to Sophomore year.

Chance me for the following colleges please!!!
(preliminary list)

University of Maryland: college park
Penn State: University Park
Syracuse University
Tulane University
University of Miami
University of Delaware
NYU
University of Michigan Ann Arbor
Villanova
Rutgers
Temple
GWU
Georgia Tech

Really interested in something like a business/ film joint program, whether it be Majoring in business in minoring film, or a communications and business double major.

So can I overcome my bad freshman year with my huge upward trend?

Given your current GPA, and to a slight extent your SAT score, NYU is a reach school. 75% of NYU’s freshmen were in their top ten percent, and the average SAT score for admission rests at 1310. Given their 30% admission rates, it’s going to be extremely difficult to be accepted without top notch scores.

You stand a pretty good change at Syracuse and Penn State University Park from what I can see from their admission stats. Tulane, Georgia, and Villanova are a little bit more difficult, but no where near NYU’s standards.

From what I can tell and see, you stand a decent fighting chance at a majority of the colleges listed if you can lift your SAT score a little higher.

Plus, the slacker who turned motivated always makes for an interesting admission paper.

Thanks- Also forgot to list my senior schedule!
AP Psych
SUPA (Syracuse level college class) English
SUPA Forensics
Honors Calc
Entreprenourship
TVP II
Film Studies
Gym/Health

That’s an odd thing to say. Tulane’s admission rate is around 25%, their average SAT is about 1310 also (The mid 50% scores are nearly identical), and NYU has 68% in top 10% of class vs 65% for Tulane (Your 75% figure is just flat out inaccurate. Look at their common data set report http://www.nyu.edu/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/cmd276/fact.book.data/submit_factbook2.pl?view=3&year=20083&cdspage=a&cdspage=b&cdspage=c&cdspage=d&cdspage=e&cdspage=f&cdspage=g&cdspage=h&cdspage=i&cdspage=j&cdspage=k</a> Section C10). I cannot see how you justify saying that is “no where near NYU’s standards”. Try doing some research first.

I am not sure what you expect anyone to say that will change anything you would do. You have a good list of schools, nicely balanced between reaches, matches, and pretty much for sure. It would be different if you had only listed Harvard, Yale, and Stanford, but your list matches your academic record very well. Go for it! You should get in about half of them. I am assuming cost is not an issue for you?

i’m not really sure about my financial situation but I think we’re OK. What i was really looking for though was specifically which schools I would get into , which are reaches, matches, safetys, etc. Could you help me analyze this? Becasue i’m not planning on applying to that many schools, unless if you think it would be smart to apply to all of these?

Ah, I see. OK, I would drop Ga. Tech considering your area of interest. That leaves 12, which these days is not a bad number.

Your GPA is, as you say, your weak spot. Considering Rutgers is your state school, you should be OK there. You are well above average for SAT score and GPA should be OK there too. I think Delaware should be a relative safety also, for the same reasons.

The others are all matches to reaches of varying degrees, with NYU, Tulane, GW, Villanova, and Miami being the biggest ones, along with Michigan. You might want to add another safety or two, but this list should be fine. You will get into at least a few.

any other school that could be of interest to me that I don’t have listed?

Oh sure, there are tons. Wisconsin is roughly similar to Michigan, and Maryland is a potentially good school for you, so there is that route. On the private school side, there is University of Rochester, University of Pittsburgh, George Washington, American, and a few others. I don’t know what the film studies programs are like at any of these schools, but frankly unless it is completely missing, I wouldn’t pick based on that. Most students change majors at least once.

Just fyi, film studies at Wisconsin is amount the best in the nation. Huge film archive, brilliant faculty and great classes. It’s in the Dept. of Com. Arts (across the street from the business school).
