Chance a Former Slacker, Rising Senior

Hi guys,
I used to be a huge slacker. I didn't do homework , never studied for tests, did nothing after school...It was a disaster. Then about halfway through my sophomore year I realized that what I was doing was gonnna hurt me in the long run. From that point on I never recieved below a B. However, the damage had alraedy done,as my freshman year GPA was pretty low and my sophomore year GPA was just ok. This year I had a huge improvement and really did as well as I know I can.

So heres my stats, and let me know what you think.

Freshman year: 2.78 GPA
Sophomore Year: 3.14 GPA (Honors English)
Junior Year: 3.72 GPA (AP Gov, Honors English, History, Business classes. Awaiting AP exam score for AP Gov)

Cumulative GPA: 3.23

School doesn't weight.

I go to a top 10 school in NJ, and we typically do very well at most colleges (Northern Highlands)

took SAT's Twice:
First time: 610 Math, 620 Reading, 640 Writing 1870 total.
Second time: 610 Math , 620 Reading, 680 writing, 1910 total.
Considering taking a third time come october.

Really interested in something like a business/ film joint program, whether it be Majoring in business in minoring film, or a communications and business double major.

So can I overcome my bad freshman year with my huge upward trend?

If your aiming for Stern (business), then I strongly believe that you need to up your SAT by at least 150+ points and improve your GPA as much as possible to be competitive.

Sorry to be harsh, but assuming you’re aiming for Stern, you have pretty much no shot at the moment given that the average unweighted GPA of those admitted is ~3.84 unweighted. CAS is ~3.68. As far as numbers go you’re below the average for both the Math and CR SAT. As dudemancool123 said, you’re going to have to raise your SAT by at least 150 for CAS and 300 for Stern since your ECs aren’t that stellar.

How many APs does your school offer? I know a lot of people that got in only having taken like 2 APs but their schools only offered ~5.

Also NYU wants to see 4 years of lab science, math, foreign language as well as English and social studies to be in the most competitive position.

I don’t think forensics meets the bill (you can check with them). Don’t see a language in your scheudle. Considering your academics, I think it would be a mistake to not meet their academic suggestion for 5 academics, especially for Stern.

Also, what about history/ and economics as a senior? Psych and Entreprenourship (sp?) are elective classes. So is film. And what is TVP II?

As I said above you should have 5 academics and 2 electives plus gym/ health. Speak to admissions or look at their forum where they clearly state this.

I don’t believe you can double major in Stern and Steinhardt. (Steinhardt is where the Communications, or “Media, Culture, Communications” program is.)

There’s a Business/Entertainment/Technology specialization, but it’s only a minor. To be honest, I don’t feel you’re a competitive candidate for Stern. You seem like a better Steinhardt Communications fit, but again, business in Stern is only a minor.

I’d be fine with the comm. school. I really can’t take another yaer of Spanish, I am awful at it. I barely squeezed by with a B this year. TVP II is a film production class. Forensics is a lab science at my school.
