Chance a future soldier

Hi all. Im new to the forum. Im a junior at a prep school in Mass. I am hoping to become an officer in the Army. Unlike nearly all of my prep school friends, I have little interest in small, New England liberal arts, which seem to be very popular with a lot of kids. I will be applying for ROTC scholarships in the summer, and am hoping that you all can chance me with the following schools:

Norwich University ( A Senior Military College)

Virginia Military Institute ( A Senior Military College)

Notre Dame

Ole Miss

Richmond
6.West Point (probably no chance -super competitive, but I will still try)

Colorado College (not really looking at CC, no ROTC, but I liked its block plan)

Now, before I give you my stats, I have not yet taken the SAT's o ACT's, as I am only a junior, but I am signed up for them in February and in March. Also, my GPA might seem a bit low as I go to a prep school. I went to public school for eight years and I can safely say that academics at my school are much more difficult than at my local high school.

White Male
NH resident
2nd generation American (grandparents and mother came here in 1969)
-GPA: 3.7 (school does not weight)

-Class Rank: 25/250 (again, much lower than if I was at public school. Lots of really impressive kids at my school)

Course load: Some Ap's and honors, and a concentration with foreign affairs/history

School Awards: International Programs award (for traveling to Brazil)
Humanities award (to soph. who did best in the humanities)
Extracurriculars:

First Trumpet player in band (played for 9 years)

Model UN Teacher (Traveled with Model UN to Qatar and Brazil)

Sports Editor of School Newspaper

Big Brothers/Big Sister volunteer (I have a little brother)

8 year wrestler (starting on the #7 ranked wrestling team in the country)

Road bike racer (10th place at New England Championships)

Founded Cycling team at school, which will gain varsity status next year

Worked with city government for 2 years over summers

Major: International Affairs/ Political Science

I really loved Norwich and VMI, and I am very excited about Notre Dame. Its a great school with an even better ROTC program. Please chance me, and I will be sure to chance you back. Thanks very much.

Bump,bump,bump!

Bump bump bump!

To be honest, I don’t know much about ROTC, but your stats aren’t too bad. Notre Dame and West Point will still be high reaches, through.

Thanks! Anyone else? I also forgot to put down Texas Christian University as another school that I will be applying to.

Anyone? I’d really appreciate it.

If you score close to a 2200 or 32 on the ACT, I see you getting into Notre Dame. (Just as long as your essays are polished). I don’t know anything about the other schools, sorry.

Thanks. Above I said TCU as the school I was adding to the list.

I meant to say Texas A&M. Thanks ,

Bump,bump,bump!!!

First: Stop ‘bumping’ constantly. It’s annoying and anyone who wants to chance you will click on the link.

Second: Lots of people applying are from very competitive schools, so stop making excuses for your GPA. If your prep school is that good, adcoms will see it from the fact sheet they receive, and that will be taken into consideration- they look to see how well you performed in your environment (but that’s not to say you will be given an advantage over someone from a less competitive school, as they may have had less resources at their disposal).

Third: I agree with the above analysis that WP and ND are reaches; I’d say A&M is probably a solid match (being from out-of-state may hurt you, though, as they must fill in-state quotas), Richmond is maybe a slight reach (but I’m pretty unfamiliar with that one, so don’t quote me), and you should be good for Ole Miss and Norwich.

ECs look above average, but nothing out-of-this world (no worries, few are).

Good luck!

I think if you manage around a 700on all parts of the SAT you should be good for most of those schools. That thrown in with a great essay and recommendations should be very good.

I feel your pain about the ranking being higher in public school. I’m about 12th in my class at my private school, but if I want to my local public I would be 1st or 2nd. From everything I’ve heard your good as long as your top 10% (which you are) and if your GPA is high with a good course load. If you have all that then the college will reconize that your from a competative school I believe.

I think you should be fine for all except for Notre Dame and West Point. If you can get that 2200 or 32, you should have a solid chance at those schools. Best of luck!

sorry about the bumping. never done this before so I just saw people bumping on other treads.
Also, I didn’t mean to make an excuse for my GPA. I know that there are many more talented kids than me, and Im fine with my GPA. I should have worded the statement differently and I apologize for that. I don’t try to get a specific grade in school, I just try to learn what the teachers are showing me. Thanks for your help.

I really don’t know much about other schools.

Norwich University - Safety, but I need to warm you. Your freshmen year is going to be like Hell. And their upper class cadet are strict. Every year in January some Norwich Cadets comes down to the MA for drill comp, and I can say the way they inspect cadets and judge drill team is more intensive. And many other top JROTC unit from the Northeastern area come up just for this drill comp.

West Point - They only take very few people. Really hard school to get in, even compare to Princeton, Yale, Harvard.

But I can say Norwich is a very good ROTC school, and you will gain many skills from it.

Chance me back please!

I live close to Norwich, a few family members went there. I definitely think you’d get in.

Actually, You’re looking okay for West Point too. Consider this: The entering class of 2014 had an average GPA of 3.5 and their SATs were in the mid 600s. For more of the average class profile, here:

I don’t know as much about your ROTC chances, but if you’re interested in West Point or ROTC than here’s a great place for info:

They have a section for ROTC too.

Hope this helps.

Your gps is good- weighted or unweughted? The rotc looks at a whole candidate score ie leader scholar. Being a wrestler is great, are you in the running for team capt? Remember it is a twofold process for rotc. You need to be admitted to the school and awarded an rotc scholarship. You might be interested in looking at the serviceacademy forums site, lots of good info there. Remember that there are multiple board dates so you want to get your file in early enough to be before the maximum number of boards. You are starting early which is good. In terms of number of scholarships available army is a good choice but you should researc which branch is best for you. You can pm me if you want. My D just went through this and received a 4yr to Fordham and also is/was asks partcipant and west pt candidate. GL
