Chance a gifted student with a slightly low GPA but great SAT scores and schedule!

Junior, rising senior

PSAT 223 (National Merit Scholarship finalist fa sho!)

SAT 2210 (superscored, only taken twice) Math 800 and CR 740

4 years soccer 2 years varsity at a 5A school

IB diploma candidate

GPA 4.2ish Weighted and 3.35ish Unweighted

As an IB diploma candidate i am required to do many hours of service and whatnot

Course schedule for next year:
IB Biology HL
IB English HL
IB History of the Americas HL
IB Economics SL
IB Math SL didnt have an option to HL
PreIB Physics
Soccer
Speech (only first semester)

ECs include working at a CPAs office doing accounting and forensic accounting. I have become a valuable asset to his business and he lends me out to high profile lawyers to do work. I have been doing this for about 6 months and will continue until i leave for college
Also I have been playing guitar for 10 years and have played many concerts and taught at a few summer camps
Been on numerous mission trips and have done tons of community service with the boy scouts
Going to Texas A&M and UT Austin summer programs this summer

Schools Im looking at are:
Rice (parents went there, grandpa was a professor there until a few years ago)
Carnegie Mellon University
Washington University in St Louis
Emory
Cornell
Colgate (grandpa went there, dont know if that helps)
NYU
Wake Forest
Brandeis
Grinnell
Trinity College
Tufts

Im looking to major in Mathematics, specifically in Applied Math or Operations Research

You can PM me if you wanna read my common app essay!!

Bump? Anyone wanna chance me??

Change the title if you can, people may be offset by someone calling themselves gifted.

PSAT- Don’t guarentee yourself as a finalist. You could very well be commended or a semifinalist, or not even make it at all. But good score.

SAT- Again, I realize you may be smart, however, “only taken twice” makes you sound like you are trying to sound better than you actually are.

soccer- ok, do you play for a club or do you think you have any chance at being scouted?

I’d like to point out IB diploma candidates, being one myself, don’t do THAT much community service. It’s 150 hours, 50 hours of action, 50 hours of community service, and 50 hours of art. Over two years, that is not alot, and it doesn’t show “focus” in your area (IE, you can go to 50 different things for an hour).

personal note The school I go to is primarily IB over AP as well. It is so cool you have IB Economics! Our only IB 6th subjects (IE, classes that are SLs only, since you have to take the exam for them) are chemistry, computer science, psychology, philosophy, visual arts, chinese, film, and music theory. Also, we don’t have a pre-IB physics, but we do have a pre IB bio/chem combo class! Also, do you mean your school doesn’t have the math HL class, or you didn’t qualify? And is your math SL Math Studies, Pre Calc, or Calc?

Pretty cool EC, idk how unique it is though. If you are an Eagle Scout though, that is a fairly highly regarded EC.

Also, where are you from? What ethnicity? Financial aid? Family income? etc, etc.

Anyway, IDK how unweighted/weighted GPA are compared together, but I think your kinda low GPA will put you at a severe disadvantage.

Rice-reach
Carnegie Mellon University- reach
Washington University in St Louis- high reach
Emory- reach
Cornell- reach
Colgate (grandpa went there, dont know if that helps)- high match
NYU- OOS or in state?
Wake Forest- mid match
Brandeis- mid match
Grinnell- mid match
Trinity College- match
Tufts- match

GET SOME SAFETIES ON THERE, especially if your GPA is a bit rocky.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/719138-chance-junior-without-perfect-grades.html

Wow thanks! Sorry i wasnt trying to sound cocky. The only taken twice was to show that i didnt take it many times (which ive heard is a put off to colleges)

And the HL math thing was that i couldnt get in because i had to take a class over the summer my freshman year and i didnt know. And my safety is Texas A&M, (im automatically accepted for my SAT score plus being in the top quarter) and UT Austin. Thanks for the help!

Oh and the cut off last year for NMSC Finalist in Texas (where i live) was 215

Will someone else please chance me??

anybody wanna chance?

I’d love to chance you. But the weird thing is that our stats look nearly the same, so it’s hard to say. I live in Texas, do IB, GPA isn’t that jolly, SAT/PSAT are great, and EC’s make me. Same as you.

An admissions officer at Carnegie Mellon took a look at my stats and said I had a very good chance. I have a lot of work experience and 400+ volunteer hours, which definitely gave me a boost. So try to work on that and pump up your essays. :] Which school district/school do you go to? I’m from Plano East.

Im in HISD (Houston) and Carnegie Mellon is probably my top choice so its exciting to hear the news that you got!! Im gonna do a bunch of volunteer work this summer too

Poseidenj is completely wrong about PSAT, you are guaranteed a semifinalist . Especially in a state like texas with cutt off score of like 215, a 223 IS DEFINITELY A QUALIFIED SCORe.

Your SAT is not bad, especially for the colleges you listed above. Liek Poseidenj said, you are matched in all of those schools.

You EC’s are a bit scarce, but I don’t think colleges like RIce, demand too much of EC’s. I think you have the edge in rice since you have legacy in it. I know a friend who was not that great academically but got into princeton because BOTH his parents went there.

Good lUkc :)

re: Poseidenj’s

NYU- OOS or in state?..CLASSIC lol
Carnegie Mellon University- reach/ Tufts- match… nuff said

What makes you gifted?

Thanks for posting everyone! Oh and silver turtle all i was saying is that my GPA doesnt represent my test scores and i was trying to do it without sounding pompous. I wasnt trying to say im any more gifted than anyone else. I realize now that it came off as cocky but thats mot the message i was trying to convey

Chances anybody?

Bump anyone wanna chance?

FYI. Your scores look good for National Merit Semi Finalist. However, you have to apply to be a Finalist. Finalists are not notified until February or March well after you have applied to colleges. Most but not all kids with your scores make Finalist so make sure that you follow up with the paperwork in September …essay, recommendations etc.

Oh from what ive been told, 15000 of the 16000 semi finalists get to be finalists, and you pretty much get it if your grades, SATs, and ECs match up to your score. Do you care to chance me?

Ooo chance me please :(

I thought all you had to do was send in the right scores and materials for semi-finalist. I don’t think the quality of the materials matters until they review it for scholarship standing.

Haha why are so many people posting without chancing me?
