thank you!

you will get into NW ED no question with your stats. just send in your ACT. YOU HAVE A PERFECT SCORE! your GPA isn’t awful, and I’m sure that you are still within the top 10 or 15 percent of your school. GOOD LUCK!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1168613-chances-congressional-page-columbia-ed-will-chance-back.html</a>
CHANCE BACK!

ahhhh i hope so
thanks! any other suggestions…? :D

Sorry that my opinion isnt as optimistic as Anon but I don’t think you can get into Northwestern, Michigan or CMU. Your extracurriculars are solid but not spectacular. You have leadership positions and show consistency but they are really generic for high caliber students. You ACT is great and will help a lot but one problem with it is that your best scores are science and reading. I know, at least for Michigan, that English and math are the two most important sections so that won’t help you. Also your GPA will likely do you in. GPA matters the most to basically every school and a 3.54 would be in the lowest 10% of accepted students at NU, UM and CMU. I think your chances at BC, UW-Madison and NYU are better and you have a better chance at getting in there because the overall GPA average is lower. Your test scores will make up for it enough to probably get in. And because you are in state, UIUC is just about a lock for you, especially because of your ACT. The problem with someone with a 35 ACT and 3.5 GPA is that it looks like you are brilliant but you just don’t apply yourself enough to get the top notch grades. It looks like you don’t try hard enough to do well.

Basically you should brace yourself for not getting into NU because of your GPA but if you do really well, near 4.0, first semester senior year, there is still a chance you can get into Michigan or CMU. I mean 6 APs, a 4.0 is extremely impressive and it will look like you are applying yourself correctly then.

The reason I say all of this is because I was a similar student to you when I applied. I had a 3.67 GPA (UW), while taking all accelerated or AP courses and 33 ACT, while going to one of the best high schools in Michigan, and I was rejected from NU-ED (and it was my first choice too, I fell in love with Evanston), and Michigan (in-state). I was told by a Michigan admissions counselor that they knew I would be able to handle the course load but they wondered if I would actually apply myself enough to do so. They said with my high school record, they couldn’t be sure of it so they could not admit me and told me that if I still wanted to go, I should make sure I get good grades in college and then transfer.

I’m sorry I bring bad news. I just want to give you a realistic picture of your situation and not give you false hope that really isn’t there. But still try really hard this semester and hopefully you can still get into the school of your choice. Good luck and hopefully I’m wrong about NU!

oh wow that was really helpful. thanks a lot!
thats ok cuz i kinda wanted a realistic response and posted my stuff on this website cuz i want to face the reality haha so i really wanna thank you for your thoughtful response

do u know if doing the interview would help at all?
also does anyone know about the recruiting process for a sport? XD

Yeah no problem at all.
The interview, strictly speaking, will help if you do a good job. But the problem is that it is only a small part of the material they consider for admissions. Basically if you do well it’s like getting another good recommendation so it really isn’t enough to push you from the middle of the pack to the top. The interview only helps when a student is borderline and the interview could be the difference between picking student A or student B for the last few spots. I did a lot of research in the admissions process trying to gain an advantage last year because of my weak GPA so I’ve gotten a much better prospective on the admissions process.

oh okay i see
do you think i should submit both sat and act?
and do you think i need more safety schools…?

anyone? buuummppp

With your SAT, it’s weak compared to your ACT so unless a school requires it, don’t send it in. And you should probably apply to another safety school unless you’re absolutely certain that you would be OK with going to UIUC. Even then, I would probably recommend you find at least one more so that you have another choice in the event your preferences change or something else comes up. I don’t think you would want to have to go to a community college because you didn’t apply to more safety schools. Personally, I think you’ll at least get into UW and NYU (based on the people I know from there) but you will want to be extra certain that you maximize your options.

do you think i should apply as business major or undecided…? (for all schools)
cuz im pretty sure itd be harder for me to get into nyu if i apply for their business school right?
and thanks again for everything!

bump anyone else?

can anyone else help…?
maybe chances for other schools besides michigan and nu?
thanks! :D

GPA is low but I see your test scores and essays (if they’re good) getting you into most of those schools.

NYU is probably a match because they love high scores.

CMU is a low reach still I think because of your GPA. Possibly high match.

Good Luck!

ahhh ok thanks!
do u think i can still get into nyu stern with the low gpa though?

NW for sure

800 korean amazing

haha korean doesnt really count considering im korean… haha but thanks

I’m not going to beat the dead horse about your GPA because poster Anthony said it best – the GPA is far too low for schools like NU and Michigan. You will be going up against students who will have similar test scores AND GPAs in the 3.8+ range. The ECs are good but the low GPA doesn’t allow you to stand out.

Some of the other schools are iffy and you won’t know unless you apply. But I had a 3.96 GPA and a 2100ish SAT and was rejected from BC (I was Catholic from a Catholic HS) and NYU, so I honestly think you might be disappointed in your results for schools on that level, as well.

Can you explain the low GPA? Was it the product of an outside factor? (Family reasons, illness, etc?) If so, you should try and explain yourself and your chances could improve. If not, you’re grasping at straws hoping for NU and Michigan.

University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign - Acceptance
University of Michigan - Probable rejection
Northwestern - Rejection
Boston College - Probable waitlist or rejection
New York University - Probable acceptance
Carnegie Mellon - Probable rejection
University of Wisconsin at Madison - Acceptance

There’s a load of schools I think you’re overlooking and are better matches for you! Luckily you have some time to research what is best for you intended major, but here are some surface level suggestions that are on par with your stats or are more reasonable reaches:

Notre Dame
Tufts
Northeastern
UT Austin (#7 in UG business)
University of Washington
Penn State
Villanova
Santa Clara U
Chapman
University of Portland
George Washington
Boston U
Purdue

ahh ok thanks.
but do u think it would make things more harder if i apply in for their business schools? like nyu stern…?
cuz ik its really hard to get in but i still want to apply haha

For schools with very well-regarded top tier business schools, yes. (Michigan, NYU, USC, UT, etc.) It will most certainly be a lot harder to apply directly to the business schools. That’s a no-brainer.

However, for some of the other schools with reputable business programs (Santa Clara, Penn State) that you’re more matched with would be OK to apply to the business program directly.

I also hope you don’t really write/speak like you do on this board. Using “more harder” would also get you a swift rejection from any of these schools. Just saying! It’s one thing to abbreviate on the Internet (ie: OMG, ***, LOL); it’s another thing entirely to forgo the simplest of grammar rules. You never know what admissions committees read these boards!

EDIT: OK, “What the f” gets censored? Seriously?

Your stats are awesome! I think you have a good chance at any of those schools. At NU though, they get so many awesome applicants a year so it’s always hard to tell because of the pool of applicants they have to choose from. But good luck!!

Chance me back?
