Chance a guy!

Hola.

I’m a rising senior in a Canadian high school who transferred from Thailand to do his senior year in Canada. I am an American (I grew up in the bay area), but I am of mixed race (pacific islander/white). Mother went to Columbia but did not graduate. I’m fluent in french and english. I would like to major at Pomona in Politics/Philosophy/Econ, and honestly It’d be a dream. I intend on applying EDII.

ACADEMICS

GPA-UW:3.94 (My gap dipped my second semester of my junior year, due to a number of factors including pressure from my mother who had just become homeless), admittedly I’m a bit worried about my GPA dropping my senior year just due to the stress of moving and the change in environment (two Bs at the moment, but should be easily raised to A, should be).

SAT I: 1890-- It’s a killer, but I will be retaking it in December with some actual practice (1400+ on all my practices).

SAT II: Null

AP: Have taken 3 AP Exams (Bio-4, WH-3 (in my sophomore year), Lang and Comp-4), and 3 AP Courses (Bio, Physics C-Mechanics, Statistics), and I’ll be taking the tests: Physics C, Stats, USGOV, Macroeconomics, Comp. Gov, Microeconomics in may.

EC/Awards

Varsity: soccer/futsal

JV: Volleyball (team MVP lol)/basketball (captain)

Placed fourth in the JV IHBB World History Bee Thailand, qualifying for the asian championships, but couldn’t go due to financial reasons

UWC-USA Davis Scholarship Finalist (might write about getting rejected)

Student Council Rep. for two years: acted as liaison with front office at private school. I was the only native english speaker on the team and helped lobby for bringing in FIOS (in rural Thailand), a new bus, repainting the gym, and building a designated Student Council room. Will write some supplements about this.

MUN 3 years

Debate team senior year

3 8 hour stints across SE Asia doing volunteer work as part of a school trip (Volunteer hours are a weakness).
I will be trying to volunteer at the dogwood initiative here in Canada, a canvassing thingamajig

150+ Scuba Dives, advanced PADI Scuba Diver (was certified at 10), have done supervised wreck in Japanese wrecks in the Philippines. I may write about this on my essay.

Note: I also went to French immersion school for all of my pre-teen years, including going to school in India. This is another subject for my essays.

Questions:

Chance me por favor? If I can get my SAT to 1400+, what are my chances then?

EDIT: Also, I am scheduling an interview at the moment, and I’d like to mention that the reason behind me not having a lot of political oriented stuff, is that I wanted to do molecular biology up until the end of my junior year (when there was a very controversial constitutional referendum in Thailand, one that inspired my “political passion”).

i think you’ve a very good shot at getting in if you raise that SAT 1 score, more so if you apply ED2. Your extra curriculars seem great, and with a good essay I think you’ll be in a very strong position.
I was admitted ED1 last year but took a gap year because I got an offer to play soccer for a club in spain, and I also scuba dive(though not as extensively as you) so I hope I see you at Pomona next year!

A mistake that many kids make is thinking that they have to put a certain quantity of activities on their application. Admissions committees care about the depth of commitment over an extended period of time. The scuba diving is big. The history bee is good. The international exposure and perspective is a plus. Adding a few hours of volunteer activity at the last moment is not going to impress. Pomona is a school filled with very high SAT kids. Spend your energy moving that up. 1450 would be good. No B’s this semester.

Why ED II and not ED I?

Sorry for the late reply, but I simply don’t have the time to get that all done by the EDI deadline. We still were moving stuff, my SAT is in December and I just couldn’t conceivably finish by then.

Good Luck @Bumgarner40!

@preppedparent thanks!
