Essays
Wrote the common app one about coming from underprivileged family and the problems I faced but still managed to reach the top of my class.

For the supplement I wrote about how I self studied for the AP Calc test and got a 5 per my teachers advice.

Also this year my ACC trig teacher asked me to take the AB calc test, he has never asked anyone else to do this before so I was honored. I self studied and he sent me down to the calc room before the exam. I got a 5 on the test.*

** My Trig and Gov teachers will give me amazing recs as will my counselor**

I come from an extremely low income family (Less than 10000 a year.) My parents are divorced and I live with my mom. I am a first generation college attendee.

Thanks so much for your help. I know these can be annoying. Please be brutally honest

is that gpa weighted or unweighted, of its unweighted u might stand a chance but remember its brown, there are plenty of the best students in the country they reject. u are not in for sure but u have a great shot. good luck!

chance me?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/819521-all-i-want-christmas-you-chance-me.html</a></p>

Even without your URM status, I’d say that you would have a very very good shot. However, with it, I’m sure that you’ll get in (at the very least, you’ll get deferred). Not only do you have high test scores and high grades, but you seem to have shown tons of initiative even with the extenuating circumstances in your life. Even if, by some odd chance, you don’t get in, you have a lot to be proud of my friend.

Chance me back please. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/821417-final-chances-thread-please-respond.html</a></p>

I don’t understand your second essay topic, if you haven’t finished AB or taken the BC exam yet, but its a mid-low reach for you, which is the best it can be for anyone except the kids that win intel and crazy stuff like that.
Nothing detracts from you, so you’ll be competitive, but not for sure in.

my trig teacher asked my if I wanted to take the AB exam last year and I said yes so I self studied and went down to the calc room and I got a five. My essay is about the experience and academic challenge. I had a schedule conflict this year so I could not take BC (seniors have a choice of taking AB or BC) but I am still going to take the BC test.

bump thanks

anyone else? (and the people I chanced who said they would chance back u have not yet done so. you know who u r lol)

both of your essay topics sound stupid/conceited

but i’d say 70% shot at brown

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/813975-chances-schools-updated-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

You sound stupid/conceited. Also, I know tons of people who love to brag about how they had a crappy life. I mean its all I can talk about apparently seeing how conceited I am. Seriously what kind of reaction did you think you were going to get with those comments? I did say be brutally honest but you can still have some tact about it.

Wrote the common app one about coming from underprivileged family and the problems I faced but still managed to reach the top of my class. Wrote the common app one about coming from underprivileged family and the problems I faced but still managed to reach the top of my class. -Cool that’s great for you. I don’t think you need an essay to explain something they see from your rank/family income/zip code and a few other factors.

For the supplement I wrote about how I self studied for the AP Calc test and got a 5 per my teachers advice.

For the supplement I wrote about how I self studied for the AP Calc test and got a 5 per my teachers advice. -Is this necessary? 50% of people get 5s. I don’t think it warrents an essay.

they can see that you self studied calc ap if its not in your schedule

Seeing as how the common app essay is supposed to be a PERSONAL STATEMENT and let the admissions office know more about me I think that the essay was very appropriate seeing as how my upbringing has made me the person I am today.

Also, the supplement essay was about an academic challenge and I would say self studying for the Calculus test was a challenge and I learned a lot about myself through the experience.

Clearly you don’t understand what college essays are for. What would you propose I write seeing as how my ideas are so dumb?

Ok- I know a valedictorian who had a full IB load and 2200s SAT who got rejected by brown last year… But he did not apply ED.

If you can get the underrepresented minority status your chances would improve a lot…

Brown got a record amount of applicants last year so it is a crap shoot trying to get in unfortunately… I might give you a 30-40% chance? That isn’t that bad when you consider the actual acceptance rate.

in response to other poster…

To judge a essay by its topic is absurd. It certainly has the potential to be conceited, but I don’t see why you would write it that way…

Thanks,
but how do either of my essay topics have the potential to be conceited?

Hey! i read over your stuff. you seem well-qualified. im no racist, but your races in my opinion increases your chances by almost 2. i would have originally given you 30% to get in, but now i’d say around 60% chance of acceptance.

good job, and good luck!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/820270-chance-me-please-thank-you.html</a></p>

Agree with above evaluation. Affirmative Action is by definition racist…

You don’t need to worry…
Considering your scores and ECs, I think you have a great chance to get into Brown…
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/803462-my-chances-brown.html</a></p>

bump thanks

You stand a chance! You show diversity not only in your background but in your ECs. Your essays seem compelling. AND, applying ED increases your chances significantly :-). Chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/816473-chance-aa-female-elite-schools-updated-stats.html</a> <–Include Yale also!

you definitely should have an above average shot

Thanks everyone for your input. I feel a little less nervous now.
