Some of my friends think i'm shooting too high in some places, yet my gut tells me that i have at least a small chance. opinions?

go to an extremely competitive public HS in Massachusetts
UW gpa : 3.3
W gpa : 4.0
all honors classes in HS except 2, 1 AP junior year, 2 (maybe 3) senior year, 4 if you count honors physics which is arguably the hardest course in my school (tied with AP chem i think)
SAT : 2100 superscored, 2010 highest in one sitting
M: 750
W: 710
CR: 650
(1400/1600)
ACT: 29 Composite, 31 Math, 30 English
taking subject tests (mathII and chem) in may

the lack of EC's is where i think its gonna kill me, a lot of depth in 2 but not a large variety
9 total seasons of basketball (fall AAU, winter school, spring AAU all three years)
have been working 15-20 hours a week since Aug '08
member of Interact Club (11)
member of Chem Club (11) but we haven't done anything this year
...yeah so those are my fail-EC's

rec's should be good i think, planning on one from pre-calc teacher, and the other from either CS (taught both honors and ap) or history (had him freshman and junior year)

and now for the colleges-
Vandy (yeah i know huge reach, but it'd be AMAZING to go there)
Reed College (same as Vandy, HUGE reach but still..)
USC
U Illinois
U Maryland
U Michigan
Boston U
McGill
Northeastern
VaTech

intended major is physics or aerospace engineering

will chance back!

at some of the higher level schools your low gpa will hurt you more than your lack of ec’s but at some of your match schools the ec’s will be the problem…i’d say:

Vandy: reach
Reed College: a low-er reach
USC: low reach
U Illinois: match
U Maryland: probably in
U Michigan: match
Boston U: match/low reach
McGill: match/low reach
Northeastern: in
VaTech: low reach

get your uw gpa up, maybe take the sats again and do well, and write some k.a. essays and you’ll have a better chance at some of these schools. (maybe add a safety or two)

A 3.3 gpa will hurt your chances at McGill, especially for Science and Engineering. On the other hand, McGill does not look at EC’s, except for major scholarships.

bump
and i’m new to this place so if you want me to chance you back, post your thread

Hey, I’m like in the same position as you. My friends and some fellow CCers have been telling me I have a very low shot with my dream school (USC) but I think we’ll both end up alright, somewhere, right? (:

Anywho, I think you have some solid test scores. Just ace the rest of this year and you should be fine! Northeastern is definitely in the realm of possibilities, and so is USC. I don’t know much about the others. Good luck!

thanks, hahah yeah i’m hoping on USC because the thought of spending my college years in LA is frankly too appealing to say no to

and bump for the record?

also, i figured i may as well ask the question… any chances whatsoever at uc berkeley? it has been my dream school for 2 years yet i always believed i had about zero chances at it. also what about ucla?
and these stupid a-g reqs… do they REALLY necessitate 1 year’s worth of fine arts? i read somewhere they can be voided completely if you average a 690 on the SATs… is that legit or no?

Um I don’t know all the schools but I’m gonna be honest with you on the rest. Your gpa is kinda low and your ecs are so so… Retake the SAts and work hard this semester and you might have a decent chance for UCLA and u of michigan and such, but USC and vand might still be kinda a high reach although who knows sometimes its a gamble and you might get in. Never ever hurts to try. Oh yeah please chance me too I dunno how to attach threads but if u click on my name and go to my posts it one of the only things I’ve posted

Whoever told you that was lying because I live in CA and I asked my counselor if that 690 SAT score thing was true and she said no D: Basically if you don’t have those darned a-g reqs down, consider your application null and void…

wow thats ridiculous… stupid fine arts. well, assuming i get them down b/c all i need is fine arts, what are my chances at berk, ucla and ucsd?
oh and to try and make my resume more impressive, that 15-20 hours a week since Aug '08 equates to over 1560 hours working over the past two years so maybe that will make it more impressive?

Vandy - reach
Reed College - reach
USC - low reach
U Illinois - very high reach, engineering at UofI is so difficult to get into
U Maryland - match
U Michigan - reach
Boston U - matc
McGill - dont know
Northeastern - probably a match
VaTech - dont know
